When Andy reached out to our team at Engaged on Maui, he had the sweetest idea. Andy and Tanya have a five-month-old baby, and they wanted to capture some updated family photos while vacationing in Maui. What Tanya didn’t know, though, was that Andy had a much bigger plan in mind.

THE PLAN:

When Sumit reached out to us, he had a clear vision—he wanted his proposal to be romantic, unforgettable, and straight out of a dream. And let me tell you, he nailed it.

His plan? A secluded Maui beach, a rose-petal-lined walkway, and glowing “MARRY ME” letters as the perfect backdrop for one of the biggest moments of their lives. From the very start, you could feel how much thought and love he put into every detail. He wanted the setting to be just as breathtaking as the love they share. These high school sweethearts have been together for 10 years so he knew he wanted to go big!

Mark and Alex’s perfect proposal on Maui was filled with the prettiest yellow and white roses arranged in a heart, a gorgeous sunset, and a whole lot of laughter. This floral setup was one of our favorites for 2024. It’s simple, romantic, and stunning for proposal photos!

THE PLAN:

Mark reached out to us when they planned their trip to Maui in March. He has family that lives here in Maui and he knew he wanted to pop the question while they were visiting one of his favorite places. Alex and Mark were celebrating their 2 year anniversary and he knew it would be the perfect time to reach out and get a proposal plan going.

THE PROPOSAL:

Alexandria had no idea what Mark had planned when they strolled along the Maui beach at sunset. When they approached the heart-shaped arrangement of white and yellow roses in the sand, she lost it. Mark was down on one knee, holding out the ring that would change their lives forever. Her surprise quickly turned into happy tears as she said “yes” to forever with the waves crashing behind them. It was a moment of pure magic and love.

Kris and Sophie’s romantic Maui beach proposal was a dream come true. Set against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset and adorned with an abundance of vibrant red roses. As light danced on the waves, Kris knelt in the soft sand, asking Sophie to spend forever together. Kris and Sophie met in high school and have been together for 6 years. So this summer trip to Maui was the perfect time to pop the question!

THE PLAN:

Kris was super flexible in his proposal plans! He mentioned a beach proposal filled with roses. Simple and romantic, a perfect combo! So we picked the date that would work best for them while they visited Maui. After setting a date and time, I met them at one of our favorite beaches. At this point, all that was left to do was propose.

THE PROPOSAL:

Sophie was shocked as they walked in between rows of red roses and Kris got down on one knee. The evening was warm, inviting, and a perfect golden glow was wrapped around them. After the initial shock wore off, we took some photos with the red roses and let them walk along the shore for a mini engagement photoshoot. Then when the sun had set, we took out the flash and had some fun with the blue hue of the sky. But it was an absolutely perfect day for this very sweet couple. So the start of their forever begins!

Bryce and Brianna’s love story found its perfect next chapter on the golden sands of Maui. Visiting the island for a dreamy getaway, Bryce knew he wanted to make their trip unforgettable by asking Brianna to spend forever with him. We had a lot of wiggle room when it came to this proposal. Bryce and Brianna had no big plans, so a romantic sunset proposal was easy. It was easy to pick from one of our favorite spots and set a meeting time just before the sun started to set.

What You Can Do

Small-Scale Proposal Setups: Engaged on Maui specializes in creating magical moments, like intimate proposals on the beach. Small setups, placing an item on the beach or some flowers, are generally allowed with the right permits. Keep the footprint minimal and temporary to blend in with the natural beauty of the surroundings.

• Example: Setting up a heart of petals on the sand is fine as long as it’s easy to clean up and doesn’t interfere with the public’s use of the beach.

Beach Photography: Capturing the moment when someone says “yes” is what Engaged on Maui does best. As we always follow DLNR rules and regulations, your photographer will have a permit!

We always make sure to leave the beach exactly as we found it—pristine and untouched. If you have a larger setup like the one below, we will have someone on site to clean up afterward. If you have a smaller set up, like an orchid flower circle, your photographer and you will clean up (and use for more photos!)

Small Gatherings: Planning a small engagement party on the beach? With the right permits, you can set up a low-key celebration. And what we mean by lowkey celebration is that you can have up to 30 people on the beach as is covered by our permit

What You Can’t Do

Large-Scale Events: If you’re thinking about hosting a big event, like a HUGE post-proposal party with dozens of guests, elaborate decorations, or multiple vendors, this falls into the large-scale category. Permits are impossible to get for these sorts of events.

Permanent or Semi-Permanent Structures: Any plans to install structures like an arch or a large canopy on the beach? These are not allowed for commercial activity. Hawaii’s beaches are meant to remain natural and accessible to all, so keep things light and temporary. This also includes beach picnic setups with teepees and large umbrellas.

Table and chairs for beach dinners: Beach dinners are prohibited in Hawaii. All sand is state land, and these are not approved by DLNR. For private dinners we suggest Hotel Wailea or The Four Seasons Wailea.

Respect the Environment and Community

We planned Ryan’s Lahaina proposal around existing dinner reservations, so Haley wouldn’t suspect a thing.

Ideally, you would come to us early, before you have any activities set in stone for your Maui vacation, so we can pick your proposal date and everything can be planned around your big moment. Popping the question on your first or second full day when you don’t have much to do (besides a nice dinner) is usually best case scenario.

Since proposals are a surprise (they often know it’s coming but not where or when), keeping your schedule open can be tough.

One thing we recommend doing is telling your sweetie you would like one or two days of the vacation to plan. Having two days of your own to plan is nice because you can use one of those days to either throw them off your scent or have some surprises to kick off the celebration of your engagement the day after the proposal.

However, if your other half is the planner in your relationship, then this request can raise too much suspicion. Or clients find Engaged on Maui when their itinerary is already full.

When your itinerary is action-packed, we have to find openings and locations that will work with your plans. The downside is that it can force us to plan proposals at times we wouldn’t normally shoot at because lighting is very hard to work with. The upside is that your proposal fits so well into your itinerary, they won’t see it coming.

THE PLAN:

Ryan came to us wanting to propose to Haley on a very special date – their 10th anniversary! They had dinner reservations at Fleetwood’s on Front St. for the occasion. They were already planning on checking out Lahaina town before dinner so figuring out a beach in Lahaina was the way to go.

Ryan wanted to keep his Lahaina proposal simple. They had a lot of activities planned and he preferred to pop the question on one of their chill days.

We know the instinct can be to go big and over-the-top, especially when you see proposals like that on social media, but honestly so many of our favorite proposals are simple and heartfelt. The emphasis is kept on the couple, their love, and the commitment they are making to each other.

THE PROPOSAL:

On that day, our photographer Tim discreetly waited for Ryan and Haley at the start of the beach. It was a little bit of a walk to the proposal spot, so Tim secretly followed them to make sure he could capture Ryan getting down on one knee.

Haley must have had a suspicion, or at least a hope, that Ryan would propose on their anniversary, but her reaction was still surprised and then overjoyed.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

For beach sessions, we normally plan timing at sunrise, early morning, or ending at sunset for the most flattering lighting.

Ryan and Haley’s dinner reservation was before sunset and we had to give them enough time to get from the beach to the restaurant. We knew with the timing, their lighting wouldn’t be as soft as we like and they would miss any sunset colors, but Tim made it work. Ideal lighting or not, their love shines! Ryan and Haley have been together through high school, college, and beyond, so it was an incredible honor to be part of this huge steps in their lives!
