The short answer is simple: No, there are no truly private beaches on Maui.

While some beaches may feel secluded or harder to access, all beaches in Hawaii, including every beach on Maui, are considered public land. That means anyone can legally access and enjoy them.

Why Aren’t There Private Beaches on Maui?

Hawaii has some of the most unique shoreline laws in the United States. On Maui (and throughout all Hawaiian islands), beaches are generally public up to the highest wash of the waves, also called the shoreline high-water mark.

This means that even if a luxury resort, private home, or beachfront property sits directly next to the ocean, the sand itself is still public land.

So while a property owner may own the land leading up to the beach, they do not own the beach itself.

This is why you may see beautiful beachfront resorts, villas, and private homes with beach access, but you cannot reserve the actual beach exclusively for yourself.

For proposal planning, this means one important thing: we can never guarantee a completely private beach proposal on Maui.

Even at quieter locations, there is always the possibility of beachgoers, photographers, walkers, families, or locals enjoying the shoreline.

Can Some Beaches Feel Private?

Yes… absolutely.

While there are no private beaches on Maui, some beaches feel far more secluded than others, depending on:

• Season and tourism volume

A beach that requires a short walk, has limited parking, or sits in a less-trafficked area can often feel surprisingly intimate.

Sunrise proposals, weekday proposals, and locations away from major resort zones also tend to offer more privacy.

That said, “less crowded” is very different from “private.” If total privacy is a must-have for your proposal vision, relying on a public beach can be risky.

Why We Can’t Guarantee a Private Beach Proposal in Maui

This venue is an excellent option for couples who want the best of both worlds:

• Oceanfront setting
• Access to a beach nearby

What makes White Orchid Beach House especially unique is that while the adjacent beach is still public (because all Maui beaches are public), it tends to stay much quieter than many other beaches.

Why? Because it isn’t easily accessible.

Most people would only access that beach by coming through the property area or knowing exactly how to get there, which naturally limits foot traffic. As a result, it often feels far more secluded than traditional public beach locations.

This gives couples a much more intimate experience while still enjoying a stunning beachfront proposal backdrop. It’s one of the closest experiences you can get to a “private beach proposal” on Maui—without actually claiming private beach access.

Is a Private Venue Proposal Worth It?

Sumit and Jenny’s romantic proposal on Maui had hundreds of red roses and topped with a ‘Marry Me’ sign. We’re always excited to pull out these light up ‘Marry Me’ letters so when Sumit mentioned them we knew it was going to be stunning.

THE PLAN:

When Sumit reached out to us, he had a clear vision—he wanted his proposal to be romantic, unforgettable, and straight out of a dream. And let me tell you, he nailed it.

His plan? A secluded Maui beach, a rose-petal-lined walkway, and glowing “MARRY ME” letters as the perfect backdrop for one of the biggest moments of their lives. From the very start, you could feel how much thought and love he put into every detail. He wanted the setting to be just as breathtaking as the love they share. These high school sweethearts have been together for 10 years so he knew he wanted to go big!

THE PROPOSAL:

As the sun began to dip, casting that signature Maui golden glow, they arrived hand in hand. The sound of the waves, the roses lining the way, and the magic of the moment made time feel like it stood still. When Sumit dropped to one knee, emotions took over. And of course—Jenny said YES!

Lyndon and Jeanne’s love story has always been filled with love and laughter. Their trip to Maui was already a dream, but Lyndon had something even more magical planned… a storyteller cliffside proposal. As they took in the island’s breathtaking beauty, he dropped to one knee and asked Jeanne to be his forever. With happy tears, a resounding “yes,” and the ocean waves cheering them on, their love story reached a beautiful new chapter in paradise.

THE PLAN:

Lyndon reached out a few months before their trip with a plan in mind. We took his proposal package and added a few things to really up the romance. After reviewing his options and picking out a date we had the perfect cliffside proposal plan in place.

THE PROPOSAL:

For the proposal, Lyndon and Jeanne hiked up to a cliffside lookout to enjoy the views, but Lyndon had a surprise. An acoustic guitarist strummed a soft melody and sang while a graceful hula dancer told a love story through movement. With the waves crashing, the wind in the air, and the romantic music serenading them, Lyndon got down on his knee. The breathtaking view behind them, the music playing, and the sun setting made this proposal seem like it was made for a movie set.
