Robert wanted to pop the question at sunset while they were on Maui.  We’ve just been having such beautiful sunsets lately, I knew he would be thrilled with this stunning sunset proposal in Wailea.  

THE PLAN:

At the pre-arranged time, Robert would take Alexis on a walk down the beautiful Wailea beach we had chosen together.  There was a little sandy spot encircled by lava rocks where he was going to propose. Our associate photographer Tenessa would be there ready and waiting behind some bushes to photograph them when they got there.

THE PROPOSAL:

When they got there, Robert guided Alexis to just the right spot.  Once they were there, he dropped to one knee! He proposed at sunset, and they had magnificent colors in the sky.  

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Right after the proposal we had a small engagement session right on the beach.  This white, sandy beach down in Wailea is hard to beat! We had just the right amount of sand at this location during this time of year.  At some times of the year, there is not as much sand here. But thankfully, we know how the seasons affect our beaches here on Maui and can plan proposal locations accordingly.  We also had these awesome lava rocks everywhere that made for some really cool diversity in the shoot. The lava rocks, the sunset, and the colors made Robert and Alexis’s proposal absolutely perfect.

When we spoke with Jack, he loved the idea of this location in South Maui.  He had come to Maui before, so he was familiar with the area.  Also, he knew that his love, Christine, is a pretty private person, so he wanted a more secluded moment on a beach.
This ukulele beach proposal in Wailea was an easy sell for him!

THE PLAN:

The plan was that one of our all-time favorite ukulele players, Charles Nahale, would be on the beach.  He would be casually playing their song–a love song by Kenny Chesney.  They would walk past him and “stumble upon” an orchid flower circle.  We just love the extra layer of personalization added to this proposal with their song playing!  A little bit of personalization can really make your proposal extra special!

THE PROPOSAL:

The proposal went off without a hitch!  Our associate photographer Amber was hiding in the bushes, waiting for the big moment!
As they passed by the ukulele player and came upon the gorgeous pink orchid flower circle, I wondered at what point Christine realized this was all for her. Jack led her to the center of the flowers and dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him! Amber was snapping away as Christine answered YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Jack quickly pointed out our photographer, and we got started on our sunset engagement session. We got some beautiful shots of the happy couple on the beach as the sun dipped into the sea. And, as we took some sweetheart shots, Charles played their song again!  It was a lovely proposal!

Algin reached out to me about wanting to pop the question to his sweetie Miguel.  He wanted to go over the top.  We knew that an over the top Four Seasons proposal was the perfect way to do it.  We love having proposals at Plumeria Point there.

THE PLAN:

So the big question was how we were going to get Miguel up there without tipping him off that something was going on.  We created a fake experience through the Four Seasons where both of them were going to be blindfolded and they were going to use their five senses to experience Maui.  So they put the blindfold on Miguel first, and they secretly did not put one on Algin.  The server, Mark (who is always our server for these proposals and always amazing) led them up to Plumeria Point.

THE PROPOSAL:

He then took Miguel’s hand and led him over to where the proposal was going to happen and Algin was already up on Plumeria Point waiting for him.  When Miguel took off his blindfold, his sweetie was there ready to propose!  We had an ukulele player playing their song when Algin dropped to one knee and proposed.  Of course, Miguel said, “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Then we went to Wailea Beach just below the Four Seasons to have a small engagement session.  That beach is always a little bit busy, but luckily that evening the beach was relatively empty.  So that was a happy surprise for us.  After their engagement session, we returned to Plumeria Point where Mark and the Four Seasons’ staff had flipped the space.  They turned the proposal location to a dining location.  The men were able to enjoy the Ultimate Dinner Experience up at Plumeria Point which was a spectacular way to round off the whole proposal experience.

Algin and Miguel:  Congratulations on you over the top Four Seasons proposal!  We loved every minute of planning this wonderful surprise with you!

On their last day of their Maui trip, Liron decided he wanted to finish their trip in spectacular style by booking the Four Seasons Maui Ultimate Dinner Proposal.

THE PLAN:

Everything was laid out, we had a plan set, but the weather wasn’t cooperating.  It’s so unusual for the South Shore to get rain like we were expecting.  It had been raining all day.  We had our eyes glued to the radar all day to be sure we could pull off this proposal!  The rain just kept coming in and out, and we decided to just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

THE PROPOSAL:

We put a little pop-up tent over the set-up so we could keep the flowers and everything all nice and dry.  And, thankfully, it turned out really lovely. When they arrived, Liron led Samatha out to the table, and she gushed over the flowers. Shortly after they sat down, Liron popped the question under the tent.  Samantha was so surprised, and of course she said, “Yes!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We left from there to do an engagement session down by the beach at the Four Seasons and the surrounding area.  The sunset was really lovely that night with the storm clouds turning purple overhead and some pink sky coming through.  That just goes to show you that even if it’s stormy we can still create beautiful images and pull off a great proposal!

Liron and Samantha:  Congratulations on your Four Seasons Maui Ultimate Dinner proposal!  I loved that you were willing to brave the possible rain and wound up with a gorgeous proposal!  Cheers to a happy lifetime together!

These two lovebirds were staying at the Four Seasons on their trip to Maui. Not only was it a super special day because it was proposal day, but it was also Faraneh’s birthday.  She knew it was going to be an awesome day.  But she had no idea all the surprises Siavash had in store for her.  Part of the surprise was that Siavash had conspired with their best friends to have them come to be part of dual celebration for her Maui birthday proposal at Plumeria Point.

THE PLAN:

The plan was they were going to come down from their room and surprise Faraneh with their friends in the lobby.  There was a beautiful cake that the Four Seasons provided, and they were going to to sing a quick happy birthday and start celebrating together.  Siavash was then going to excuse himself saying he forgot his wallet so he would head back to his room. But really he would come meet me at Plumeria Point which is one of our favorite spots on the Four Seasons property.  He would wait for Faraneh there so he could propose.

THE PROPOSAL:

When Siavash left the group, I was able to get a few ninja shots of Faraneh enjoying her surprise visitors.  Then we quickly skirted off to Plumeria Point to await her arrival. We love working with the staff of the Four Seasons because everything is always planned beautifully and runs like clockwork.  It was perfect. The stairway leading up to the beautiful Plumeria Point was strewn with rose petals, and Siavash waited patiently there for his love.  Not two minutes later, Faraneh and her friends came around the corner and saw Siavash waiting for her at this gorgeous spot! Once she saw him, she headed right towards him and floated up the rose-petal lined staircase.  Siavash dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.  She, of course, said, “Yes!”  It was a really lovely moment.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Siavash quickly pointed me out, and of course I love that moment when she sees the photographer hiding for the first time!  The Four Seasons was ready with glasses of champagne to celebrate the new fiances.  Then we went down to the beach to do a quick little engagement session.  Afterwards, they were headed to a fancy dinner at Ferraro’s.  What a great night!

I love hearing about a couple’s beginning.  It’s always fun to learn how a couple falls in love and how they get to a sunset beach proposal in Wailea.  Harrison and Daniela met over a chocolate chip cookie.  These two were both working in a retirement home: him as a chef and her as a server.  They were attending a meeting, and Harrison noticed this lovely girl taking a bite of a chocolate chip cookie, and that was the moment he was “determined to be with her.”  Darling, right?  I hope they serve cookies at their wedding!

THE PLAN:

Harrison wanted to propose right at sundown.  When we were in the planning stages he told me he wanted to make it a little more personal. He asked if we could do a message in a bottle and add a photo of them next to it.  Of course we could do that!  So, the beach was set up with a framed photo of the couple next to the message in a bottle laying in the sand.

THE PROPOSAL:

Our associate Marie spotted them coming down the beach and started snapping away from her hiding spot in the bushes. Harrison timed the proposal perfectly which is absolutely crucial for sunset proposals. When they got to the bottle, Daniela knelt down to check it out, and Harrison dropped to one knee as she stood up.  He asked her to marry him and she said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

He proposed about five minutes before sundown and we were able to shoot for about twenty minutes after sunset.  They had the beach totally to themselves; it was awesome! The sunset was absolutely spectacular for their simple sunset engagement shoot.

When Mitchell contacted me he know that he wanted to propose at sunset at a beautiful beach in Wailea, Maui. I love proposal photos that happen right at sundown – and this sunset proposal in Wailea, Maui did not disappoint.

THE PLAN:

Mitchell sent me a photo book ahead of time that contained photos of him and Kenzie and some of their favorite times together. She’s a big Disney fan so he knew that he wanted “Once Upon a Time” written on the top of his memory box. He was scheduled to arrive about 20 minute before sundown, but that ended up being more like 10 minutes before sundown. But it all worked wonderfully! The sun was PERFECT and the clouds lit up nicely.

THE PROPOSAL:

Mitchell led Kenzie to the beach and toward the memory box that we had stashed in the sand. He had to convince her to pick it up, but once she did, it was all smiles (and a few tears). After Kenzie finished flipping through the photo book, Mitchell got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We stayed at the same location for the engagement session since the sun was quickly setting. Kenzie is a photographer’s dream: great style and even better reactions. When I used the F word (fiance, of course!) she teared up again. She was just so, so, so happy to be engaged. And that dress? It was her grandmother’s! Grandma’s got style for sure (and so does her granddaughter)!

This proposal was months in the making and included so much amazing talent here on Maui that I feel nothing but blessed to have been a part of it. Back when I launched Engaged on Maui, I tried to imagine what the most romantic proposal I could think of would be – I mean, sky’s the limit right? Maui is one of the most beautiful places in the world and there are so many amazing places here, it was tough to pick a spot.

Often I have guys ask me “If you were to be proposed to again, what would it look like? Where would it be?” And I always struggle with this. A proposal at sunrise would be beautiful. But I also like cliffs. Oh – and the ocean. The ocean is amazing, of course. But there was this one idea buzzing around in the back of my head that wouldn’t go away.

Maui is amazing, indeed, but there is something about the calmness of post-sunset, the breeze whispering through the palm fronds, and the ambient glow of candles that sets my heart on fire. That one scene from Friends always sticks out in my mind – the one where Monica proposes to Chandler – where they fill their living space with candles and proclaim their love for one another. That is what I wanted to create: something romantic, intimate, personal, and over the top. And I knew that the Four Seasons Maui was just the place to partner with.

Kayla and Laura really are the best of the best. Kayla and Laura plan events and weddings at the Four Seasons and truly exemplify the fine line between creative genius and planner extraordinaire. They coordinated flowers, the amazing tree swing, hair and makeup, and the breath-taking candlelit walkway where the proposal took place. They dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s – I couldn’t have done it without them. Follow Four Seasons Maui Events here and the Four Seasons Maui here to see what they’re up to!

So I had Kayla, Laura, and the Four Seasons on my team, I just needed to find the right couple. And then I thought of Josh and Heather. They are two of my dear friends that I have watched fall in love over the last two years. We met at a local coffee shop and together we hatched a plan.

A week before the proposal, I called Heather with an “emergency”. I told her that my model for this shoot with the Four Seasons had canceled last minute so I needed someone gorgeous to fill in. I have photographed Heather multiple times so she knew how to pose for me and I felt comfortable shooting her – she was in (thank GOODNESS!).

The amazing gowns she was wearing were from Rent the Runway – one for the “bridal” portion of our shoot and one for the proposal itself. There was a trunk show that week for Kimberly McDonald Jewelry, so Heather got to wear some incredibly gorgeous jewelry from her collection.

We began our shoot up at Plumeria Point with a swing adorned in flowers and lilikoi vine. As we did our bridal shoot up there, Josh, Kayla, Laura, and a small group of our friends assembled at the Serenity Pool to help set up. Because after the proposal, our friends had another surprise in store for Heather!

We finished our shoot on Plumeria Point with Heather, my assistant Amber, and Caleb from Areca Film Company (make sure you watch the video on the bottom of the post) – and headed down to our room to change for the grand finale. I told Heather that we wanted to show the ambient light of the after-dark scene at the Serenity Pool and I just needed to check in with Laura and Kayla before we moved forward. I ran upstairs, made sure everything was good to go, and then called for Amber to bring Heather up to the pool area.

I’m pretty sure I was the most nervous person there. Truly. Heather was completely in the dark, Josh stood confidently at the end of the pathway, and everyone else was cool as a cucumber. We turned the corner and Heather peered down the lit walk way. She stared for a moment, looked back at me with a confused look and I responded “You should probably go.” With that, she began to walk toward Josh.

When she reached the end of the candlelit path, he said some words to her, none of which I could hear myself, but she that smile on her face was so big it could have lit the room. Together they chatted for a moment and laughed together before Josh got down on one knee. I’m pretty sure everyone watching held their breath – it was like something from a dream. She said yes even before he asked!

Post-proposal we stayed at the Serenity pool and got some shots before heading down to our lower lawn for “more photos” – really, our friends were waiting at a beautifully styled dinner at Ferraros. We rounded the corner, and once again, she was totally caught off guard. Their son and six of their closest friends were waiting to celebrate and toast to the new chapter in their lives.

Josh and Heather: thank you for allowing us to be a part of this monumental moment in your lives. It will be a night I’ll never forget.

They met in college in one of their business classes. Ross remembers the first time he saw Brianna. She was the gorgeous blonde in the back of the room – and from that moment on he did everything he could to get himself close to her. I was sold on these two before I even met them. So when Ross pulled the trigger and asked me to be his Wailea engagement photographer I couldn’t wait to meet Brianna in person!

THE PLAN:

Ross knew the beach he wanted for his proposal in Wailea. Something with wide open beach that was private. I knew just the place.

THE PROPOSAL:

Ross led Brianna to the designated spot and he spun her to face him. They spent a moment talking before Ross got down on one knee. I loved Brianna’s reaction – she was so happy that she actually hug-tackled him after staying yes!!!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

When the newly-engaged couple were able to pull themselves back off the beach and into an upright position, Ross pointed me out and we began our engagement session! We began on the beach on which Ross proposed and then hit up a few more locations on Maui’s South Shore. The sunset that night was unbelievable!

Ross and Brianna – Thank you for entrusting me to be your Wailea engagement photographer. Your proposal was amazing and I loved getting to know both of you (you’re pretty much my favorite bankers ever)! I think it’s safe to say that we’re buds now Congratulations and safe travels back to Texas!

I’ll say this: working with Bespoke Destination Events is always an incredible pleasure. These two ladies put together the most beautiful fully-customized picnic for this romantic picnic proposal in Maui.

THE PLAN:

Kenny reached out to the ladies of Bespoke Destination Events, who then reached out to me, wanting to do something above-and-beyond for his girlfriend Shey. Both of them had moved here from Colorado with their dog Yogi and he felt this was the next step.

So together with Ashley and Natalie, we planned a romantic picnic, complete with Yogi, a musician (Ryan Robinson), and a little bit of magic.

THE PROPOSAL:

Kenny and Shey arrived at the beach and walked toward the picnic. It didn’t take long for Shey to realize this was for her! Of course, it was rather hard to hide Yogi! Moments later, Kenny dropped to his knee and asked her to marry him. There were plenty of tears and a clear yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Because we had this beautiful set up, we stayed at this beach for the duration of our session. Ryan played some beautiful music for the two of them and they watched the sun fade into the horizon together.
