When Chris contacted us, he quickly decided on an ultimate beach proposal in North Kihei.  That means that we would have at least three locations for the post-proposal photo shoot and two hours booked out just for them! We were able to get a lot of great variety during their photo sessions and we love it when we get to spend a little extra time with our couples!

THE PLAN:

Chris really loved the look of a wide open beach and was looking for privacy during their proposal, so this North Kihei beach was the perfect spot for him. We love the spots in North Kihei, even though it does tend to get a little windy sometimes.  But typically those beaches are completely empty and you get incredible views of the West Maui Mountains.

THE PROPOSAL:

When they got to the beach, they strolled towards the West Mauis.  When Chris got to the right spot, he stopped Jamie in her tracks. He dropped down to one knee and she was thrilled!  She said, “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Afterwards they headed to the Maui Tropical Plantation where we did some photos in the pineapple fields.  After that we went to one of our favorite little secret cliff spots on the way to West Maui. While there we got some really cool shots of the couple with sailboats in the background.  There was just something different than just photos on a beach which we really love!

One of the most memorable (and hilarious) parts of this proposal is that Chris and Jamie bring a life-sized, stuffed version of their dog on vacation.  Just so they feel like the dog is with them. We love that sort of thing because it adds so much character and flair to their engagement photos. And what a fun tradition to have a little stuffed dog with them!

This proposal was months in the making and included so much amazing talent here on Maui that I feel nothing but blessed to have been a part of it. Back when I launched Engaged on Maui, I tried to imagine what the most romantic proposal I could think of would be – I mean, sky’s the limit right? Maui is one of the most beautiful places in the world and there are so many amazing places here, it was tough to pick a spot.

Often I have guys ask me “If you were to be proposed to again, what would it look like? Where would it be?” And I always struggle with this. A proposal at sunrise would be beautiful. But I also like cliffs. Oh – and the ocean. The ocean is amazing, of course. But there was this one idea buzzing around in the back of my head that wouldn’t go away.

Maui is amazing, indeed, but there is something about the calmness of post-sunset, the breeze whispering through the palm fronds, and the ambient glow of candles that sets my heart on fire. That one scene from Friends always sticks out in my mind – the one where Monica proposes to Chandler – where they fill their living space with candles and proclaim their love for one another. That is what I wanted to create: something romantic, intimate, personal, and over the top. And I knew that the Four Seasons Maui was just the place to partner with.

Kayla and Laura really are the best of the best. Kayla and Laura plan events and weddings at the Four Seasons and truly exemplify the fine line between creative genius and planner extraordinaire. They coordinated flowers, the amazing tree swing, hair and makeup, and the breath-taking candlelit walkway where the proposal took place. They dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s – I couldn’t have done it without them. Follow Four Seasons Maui Events here and the Four Seasons Maui here to see what they’re up to!

So I had Kayla, Laura, and the Four Seasons on my team, I just needed to find the right couple. And then I thought of Josh and Heather. They are two of my dear friends that I have watched fall in love over the last two years. We met at a local coffee shop and together we hatched a plan.

A week before the proposal, I called Heather with an “emergency”. I told her that my model for this shoot with the Four Seasons had canceled last minute so I needed someone gorgeous to fill in. I have photographed Heather multiple times so she knew how to pose for me and I felt comfortable shooting her – she was in (thank GOODNESS!).

The amazing gowns she was wearing were from Rent the Runway – one for the “bridal” portion of our shoot and one for the proposal itself. There was a trunk show that week for Kimberly McDonald Jewelry, so Heather got to wear some incredibly gorgeous jewelry from her collection.

We began our shoot up at Plumeria Point with a swing adorned in flowers and lilikoi vine. As we did our bridal shoot up there, Josh, Kayla, Laura, and a small group of our friends assembled at the Serenity Pool to help set up. Because after the proposal, our friends had another surprise in store for Heather!

We finished our shoot on Plumeria Point with Heather, my assistant Amber, and Caleb from Areca Film Company (make sure you watch the video on the bottom of the post) – and headed down to our room to change for the grand finale. I told Heather that we wanted to show the ambient light of the after-dark scene at the Serenity Pool and I just needed to check in with Laura and Kayla before we moved forward. I ran upstairs, made sure everything was good to go, and then called for Amber to bring Heather up to the pool area.

I’m pretty sure I was the most nervous person there. Truly. Heather was completely in the dark, Josh stood confidently at the end of the pathway, and everyone else was cool as a cucumber. We turned the corner and Heather peered down the lit walk way. She stared for a moment, looked back at me with a confused look and I responded “You should probably go.” With that, she began to walk toward Josh.

When she reached the end of the candlelit path, he said some words to her, none of which I could hear myself, but she that smile on her face was so big it could have lit the room. Together they chatted for a moment and laughed together before Josh got down on one knee. I’m pretty sure everyone watching held their breath – it was like something from a dream. She said yes even before he asked!

Post-proposal we stayed at the Serenity pool and got some shots before heading down to our lower lawn for “more photos” – really, our friends were waiting at a beautifully styled dinner at Ferraros. We rounded the corner, and once again, she was totally caught off guard. Their son and six of their closest friends were waiting to celebrate and toast to the new chapter in their lives.

Josh and Heather: thank you for allowing us to be a part of this monumental moment in your lives. It will be a night I’ll never forget.

Sunrise is the most underrated time of the day. Sunset is great, don’t get me wrong, but there is something so beautiful about sunrise. The morning is quiet and peaceful, the birds are quietly chirping as they wake up for the day, the beaches are empty–it’s the perfect time to begin the first day of the rest of your life. And that’s exactly what EJ wanted to do–a sunrise proposal on Maui’s North Shore.

The Plan:

EJ told Susan that he had booked me through my sister company Angela Nelson Photography for a Sweetheart Session on Maui’s North Shore. This way, he didn’t have to worry about her not dressing up or making up a story about going to the North Shore for sunrise! Pretty clever

The Proposal:

EJ was so thorough. We had a special phrase picked out for when we felt the time is right. We would exclaim “Isn’t it a marvelous morning?” to which the other would reply “It IS marvelous!” At that time, EJ would turn to Susan and ask her to marry him! I situated them on the bluff overlooking the ocean and had them face one another. I said the phrase, EJ replied, just as planned, and the proposal commenced! She said YES!

The Engagement Session:

This may be one of my favorite engagement sessions yet. We started at Ho’okipa for the proposal and then headed down to the beach. There was a sea turtle there, which was pretty cool (because Susan loves turtles). EJ also had another surprise for her–a lei! Lei exchanges during sessions are just so sweet–I wish more opted to do that! From there we stopped at a spot up in the cane fields for some cool road pictures, then headed down to Mama’s Fish House for some obligatory beach photos. Our last stop was at Paia Bay Coffee, my favorite little coffee shop. I couldn’t have asked for a better couple to explore Maui’s North Shore with!

This proposal was one to remember for sure! And to be honest, this may be one of the most romantic ones yet! From the curtains of orchids, the amazing views at the Kukahiko Estate, to that sunset and watching the movie Dirty Dancing ocean-side, this proposal was absolutely flawless.

The Plan:

The hope was to find a venue that enabled David and his (now) fiance Irienna to watch the movie Dirty Dancing after his amazing proposal. He wanted somewhere that was private but still had an ocean view. Kukahiko Estate was the perfect place. And with the help of Bliss Maui, we were able to pull it off without a hitch.

The Proposal:

David led Irienna to the property blind-folded while our associate photographer Jenna snapped away. When she finally removed her blindfold, David was down on one knee in front of a curtain of white orchids hanging from the trees. With that kind of set up, how could you say no?! She said YES, of course!

The Engagement Session:

The engagement session took place on the property itself. Though there is no beach at the Kukahiko Estate, dramatic lava rock escarpments and lush greenery make up for the lack of sand. As the sun went down, Jenna got a few last shots before leaving David and Irienna to watch the rest of Dirty Dancing on an 80″ screen with the sound of the ocean behind them. It was truly magical.

David and Irienna: Thank you for including Engaged on Maui, Kukahiko Estate, and Bliss Maui in your amazing and romantic proposal. We are all still swooning over this! Once again, congratulations!
