When Stanley first contacted Engaged on Maui, he knew he wanted a “remote and scenic proposal.”  One of the hardest decisions was choosing between proposing during a helicopter tour, on a cliff, or at the beach.  Ultimately, this beach with its lava rocks and greenery caught his eye!  This long, sandy beach can actually get pretty crowded, especially if the surf is pumping.  However, sometimes you don’t need an empty beach, just a nice secluded corner for the big question.

THE PLAN:

With this location, it’s easy for the photographer to blend in with other beachgoers in plain sight.  In fact, you often walk right past her on the way to the proposal spot and she is able to get nice candid shots of the moments leading up to the proposal.

THE PROPOSAL:

Stanley led Kellie to the corner of the beach as planned.  He dropped down to one knee and she was overwhelmed with emotion, but of course said, “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Stanley and Kellie started off as friends. They had such a natural, comfortable connection that was easy to photograph. There were lots of laughs and playfulness on the beach that ended with a beautiful sunset!

Ken and Lisa came to Maui all the way from Australia.  He wanted to do something a little different for his proposal to Lisa–a romantic Maui scavenger hunt!  Between the two of us, we came up with the locations.  Ken trusted me to put together the clues. As a former English teacher, I love to rhyme, so every clue had a little bit of a rhyme scheme.  Also, I mapped out everything ahead of time for Ken so he’d know exactly where to go.  Although, he pretended he had no idea where the next clue would be as to not tip off Lisa.

THE PLAN:

First, Ken had to tell Lisa that the scavenger hunt was a tourist attraction he’d found online, so she wasn’t thinking a proposal was about to happen.  Then, they started their hunt in the northern part of South Maui. And the plan was for the clues to lead her farther and farther south winding up in the Makena area.  There, we had an aisle-way of orchids waiting on a semi-private beach with a ukulele player, Charles Nahale.  Charles is one of my favorite ukulele players.  He’s so genuine and kind and talented.

THE PROPOSAL:

When Ken and Lisa followed their last clue to the beach, they walked up the orchid aisle to the ukulele player and Charles played them a beautiful song.  Then Charles handed the ukulele over to Ken, and Ken played Lisa a song he had written just for her.  Ken gave the ukulele back and Charles played another song while Ken dropped to one knee and asked Lisa to marry him.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After he proposed, me popping out of the bushes with cameras ready was Lisa’s third surprise for the day.  The first two surprises being the scavenger hunt made just for her and Ken’s beautiful proposal.  For the engagement photo session, we hit several different locations in South Maui.  It was pretty voggy that day, but we still got great colors in the sky!  What an adventure!

When Kevin contacted Engaged on Maui about proposing to Melissa, he knew he wanted a simple, but incredibly romantic proposal.  He wanted to surprise her with a beautiful evening, so we decided on the Hotel Wailea’s Treehouse Restaurant Proposal.  It went off beautifully!

THE PLAN:

Before the proposal, Kevin had a book made for Melissa. They got to The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea and had a drink at the bar.  Kevin left Melissa with the host, telling her that he had left something in the car.  He hustled to the car to grab the book, and after a little bit, the host told Melissa that they were ready to seat her.  The host led Melissa down to the very private and super secluded Treehouse Restaurant.  When she got up there, Kevin was already there with the book he made for her.

THE PROPOSAL:

When Melissa got up to the Treehouse and saw Kevin at the top of the flower- and candle-lined staircase, she knew something wonderful was about to happen!  She walked up to the Treehouse and saw the intimate table setting and the private chef–it was lovely.  At that point, Kevin and Melissa flipped through the book together, and when the timing was right, he dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him!  She said yes, of course!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Since it was already dark, we did a very quick engagement session.  We used the ambient light from the candles that the restaurant had set up at the Treehouse. It was a terrific evening for these two!

It was one of those days were we hit this magical point in time where the beach was empty, the sun was just right, and, let’s face it, Stanley and Lisa’s outfits were completely on-point. This surprise beach proposal had everything from bright blue ocean water to those dreamy pastels that light up the sky as the sun sunk below the horizon.

“Lisa and I met in Philadelphia, where she was doing research at UPenn. She knew very few people in the city, but I grew up in the city and had family/friends around. We fell in love through exploring the city together.”

A story that began in the city was about to start a new chapter on a desolate beach on the beautiful island of Maui.

THE PLAN:

Before dinner, Stanley and Lisa would head to the beach for a casual stroll. Meanwhile, I followed behind and documented the whole thing!

THE PROPOSAL:

As Stanley reached the end of the beach, he turned Lisa toward him and began his speech. Before she knew it, he was down on one knee (and check out the wave-crash action behind them! Hot damn it was perfect!). It was quick, but all the emotion was there. Lisa couldn’t hardly contain herself!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Our session really did encompass everything awesome about South Maui. The blue water, the beautiful sunset, a black sand beach, and plenty of lava rocks! That night we had a stellar afterglow that lasted at least 10 minutes after sundown!

Stanley and Lisa: what a privilege it was to photograph your surprise beach proposal in Maui! You two felt like old friends that I was just catching up with. This is the start of a beautiful new chapter in your lives! Congrats!

Sunrise proposals are some of my favorites. The early morning hours are so quiet and peaceful…and the beaches usually empty! When Josh said that he wanted to propose to Delanie at sunrise, I was completely on board!

THE PLAN:

The plan was for Josh to tell Delanie they were going to watch the sun rise over South Maui early in the morning. He led her to the spot, laid down a blanket, and waited for first morning’s light to peak over the mountain.

THE PROPOSAL:

As soon as the sun came up over the mountain, Josh got down on one knee. I loved the look on Delanie’s face! They had been together nearly a decade and this had been a long time coming (look for the shot further down in the post with her promise ring and then her engagement ring)!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Since this was a Simple Sunset (Sunrise) Session, we stayed in the vicinity of the proposal for a quick 30 minute photo session! We got a few shots on the cliff and the lava rocks below (which are some of my favorite spots). We ended on the beach for a few photos! The location was beautiful and pristine and Josh and Delanie could scoot off to breakfast to begin their best day ever!

I love it when couples want to do something different than other couples I have had. When Ace contacted me, he wanted to make sure that his proposal to Linh was something unique, beautiful, and unforgettable. Together we decided on the Black Sand Beach in South Maui.

THE PLAN:

Under the false pretense of a romantic early morning brunch, Ace lured Linh out to the beach just after sunrise. There were a few people here and there, but mostly the beach was completely empty. We had stashed a GoPro inside a coconut to capture all the action too!

THE PROPOSAL:

When the time was right and the beach had cleared out, Ace turned to Linh and got down on one knee. It was beautiful, simple, and full of emotion. And, honestly, they couldn’t have picked a cooler backdrop!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

This area of Maui has so many diverse and beautiful backdrops. We went the old lava fields, Secret Cove, and ended up on our own little private beach in South Maui. The morning was absolutely gorgeous and Ace and Linh were so great together. Ace is kind of a jokester so he was able to make Linh laugh at every turn. I love couples that are so natural together and are able to genuinely connect through humor. They were just my type of folks!

If you ask Manny and Cristina how they met, they’ll tell you they met at church. Of course, that’s not the whole story, but I will leave it up to them to tell the rest at their own discretion. Manny reached out to me wanting to surprise Cristina with a proposal during their family photography session in Makena. This surprise proposal at Makena Cove in Maui took a little bit of finesse and a whole lot of go-with-the-flow. But in the end, Cristina’s reaction was so worth it!

THE PLAN:

The plan was that we would begin the photo session like a typical family session and within the first 5 minutes, I would cue Manny and that would be his gateway to propose. After the proposal, we would finish the rest of our session as an engagement/family session!

THE PROPOSAL:

Manny had put the ring in my camera bag ahead of time so I had to get Cristina to turn around so I could give it to him when the time was right. I positioned her and slipped the ring to Manny. Then I backed up, said the cue, and watched it unfold! There were definitely some tears…but she said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We stayed over by Makena Cove and the surrounding area. The morning was absolutely gorgeous and we had the whole place to ourselves!

She’s a professional soccer player and he owns his own soccer club – I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised at how adventurous these two were with me as their Maui engagement photographer! Jesse and Brittany are one of those couples who go together so easily; our session was full of love, laughter, and a lot of fun!

THE PLAN:

Jesse chose the location: a secluded beach in Makena, Maui, for his Maui proposal. I showed up early, equipped with several pounds of orchids, 2 leis for after the proposal, and my go pro to capture all the good stuff.

THE PROPOSAL:

When Brittany and Jesse arrived on scene, Brittany didn’t quite know what to make of the flower circle. Later she told me she was afraid she had stumbled upon someone else’s set up! Jesse convinced her to stand in the circle and he had her turn around. When she turned back to face him, he was already down on one knee. She was absolutely stunned!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

This area of Maui is just dripping in beautiful locations. We went to the black sand beach, some tide pools, the old lava fields, and ended on the beach to catch one stellar sunset! Jesse and Brittany even jumped in at the very end (which is my favorite way to end a photo session)!

Jesse and Brittany: It was such an honor and pleasure to be your Maui engagement photographer. I enjoyed every love-soaked (sometimes literally) moment of our time together. All my best to you both and, once more, congratulations!

This proposal is one of those proposals that will go down in my book as one of the most fun proposals I have photographed–not to mention one of the most beautiful. This cliffside sunrise proposal in Maui had bright blue water, a stunning sunrise, and an amazing reaction from Sikta!

THE PLAN:

Hetal wanted to have the location all to themselves, so I knew that a sunrise proposal was really what he was looking for. After going back and forth with a few locations, he chose this beautiful cliff in South Maui. I got there at the crack of dawn, hunkered down behind a bush, and waited.

THE PROPOSAL:

As soon as Hetal and Sikta got up there, he wasted no time. The colors in the sky were perfect and the moment was right. He got down on one knee and she was absolutely blown away! She said yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Once Sikta learned that we were going to do a full on engagement session, she didn’t want to hold back one.single.ounce. of her love for Hetal. The result was some pretty amazing candids in the ocean at the end of our session! We went to lots of different locations down in South Maui and had an absolute blast.

Sikta and Hetal: Thank you for allowing me to take part in such a special moment in your lives. I absolutely loved your cliffside sunrise proposal in Maui. That coupled with our AMAZING engagement session made for the perfect morning! Once again, congratulations!

This message in a bottle proposal in Maui was one of my favorites to date. It involved a yellow legal pad, a cleverly hidden bottle, my lost slipper, and a completely empty South Maui beach.

THE PLAN:

Adam contacted me wanting to surprise his girlfriend Alexa with a message in a bottle on a beach in Maui. I was pretty excited to help him do this. I love beach combing and what would be more romantic than finding a message in a bottle that’s also a marriage proposal?

First, I had to write the message on yellow legal pad. Why? Because whenever Adam writes Alexa notes, he always uses yellow legal pad. So I scratched out “Alexa S, will you marry me?” on some yellow legal pad, placed it in a bottle, and hid the bottle at our designated beach. I told the location to Adam via email and we were ready to rock.

THE PROPOSAL:

I shoved myself back into some bushes so I wouldn’t be detected and I waited. Soon Adam came around the corner with Alexa. He led her over to the spot and she didn’t even see the bottle! She kept snapping away–taking many, many photos! Finally, Adam pointed it out in the sand and asked her what it was.

She picked it up and as she opened the bottle, Adam got down on one knee. Between the “are you kidding me?!” and the the “Oh my gosh” she said yes!

I was so excited capturing the moment, I jumped out of one of my slippers! Even with the help of Adam and Alexa, I couldn’t find that darn thing. Somewhere, on a secluded beach in Maui, there is a blue Havaiana that is missing its mate!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We stayed in South Maui for the rest of the engagement session. We ended up going to several beaches and lava fields on our way. We had a beautiful sunset on our own little slice of beach and called it a day!

Alexa and Adam: Thank you so much for allowing me to capture such a special time in your lives. Your message in a bottle proposal in Maui was so sweet and I love the yellow legal pad detail!
