In a perfect world, you would reserve your Maui proposal as soon as you’ve booked your flight and accommodations and know you want to pop the question here. Realistically, however, most people plan their proposal with us about 1-3 months beforehand- which we are comfortable with. We also have those who reserve their date over six months in advance, which is awesome. Believe it or not, it is pretty common for us to plan proposals within a couple weeks, or even days!

Benefits of reserving your Maui proposal early

Certain proposals require more advance planning. For Haleakala, we need at least one month in order to obtain the permit. A minimum of two weeks is needed to plan scavenger hunt proposals.

If you’re interested in a helicopter proposal or a private venue such as Haiku Mill or the Four Seasons, then booking early is highly recommended so we can make sure there is availability for your desired date. This is especially true during peak wedding season when venues are really busy.

You may also want to secure your proposal date as soon as possible if you have your heart set on a certain date, or if you are looking at proposing around a holiday weekend which tend to be popular. We have four proposal photographers with different availability, so once they are all booked up, that date gets crossed off in our calendar.

If you’re envisioning a proposal on the beach or an off-the-beaten path location, the best part about reserving your proposal with Engaged on Maui early is that you get to call dibs. That means once you pick your proposal spot, it gets crossed off our list for the day so anyone who books after you can’t pick it.

Last-minute proposals

“I know this is last minute.”
“Do we have enough time?”
“I hope you can still help me.”

These are common phrases we encounter here at Engaged on Maui. The good news? We are used to proposal planning under pressure. And we try our very best to accommodate last-minute requests. As mentioned above, there are certain proposals that won’t work without ample time. We have, however, planned several beach proposals within a few days, even when the couple is already on the island. Last-minute proposal planning goes smoothly if you’re a bit flexible and open to our advice.

Ken and Lisa came to Maui all the way from Australia.  He wanted to do something a little different for his proposal to Lisa–a romantic Maui scavenger hunt!  Between the two of us, we came up with the locations.  Ken trusted me to put together the clues. As a former English teacher, I love to rhyme, so every clue had a little bit of a rhyme scheme.  Also, I mapped out everything ahead of time for Ken so he’d know exactly where to go.  Although, he pretended he had no idea where the next clue would be as to not tip off Lisa.

THE PLAN:

First, Ken had to tell Lisa that the scavenger hunt was a tourist attraction he’d found online, so she wasn’t thinking a proposal was about to happen.  Then, they started their hunt in the northern part of South Maui. And the plan was for the clues to lead her farther and farther south winding up in the Makena area.  There, we had an aisle-way of orchids waiting on a semi-private beach with a ukulele player, Charles Nahale.  Charles is one of my favorite ukulele players.  He’s so genuine and kind and talented.

THE PROPOSAL:

When Ken and Lisa followed their last clue to the beach, they walked up the orchid aisle to the ukulele player and Charles played them a beautiful song.  Then Charles handed the ukulele over to Ken, and Ken played Lisa a song he had written just for her.  Ken gave the ukulele back and Charles played another song while Ken dropped to one knee and asked Lisa to marry him.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After he proposed, me popping out of the bushes with cameras ready was Lisa’s third surprise for the day.  The first two surprises being the scavenger hunt made just for her and Ken’s beautiful proposal.  For the engagement photo session, we hit several different locations in South Maui.  It was pretty voggy that day, but we still got great colors in the sky!  What an adventure!

Mike reached out to Engaged on Maui back in April wanting help setting up a super romantic and epic proposal for his girlfriend Michelle. He wanted the kid of proposal that would make her friends and family jealous–so we set out to create just that with the help of The Pride of Maui, Honua Kai Hotel, Barnes and Noble, Sugar Beach Bake Shop and Bespoke Destination Events!

Let me tell you, Mike is head-over-heels in love with this woman. Their love story is filled with a lot of heartbreak and difficult times, but also a lot of joy. And Mike knew that he wanted to go over the top of show Michelle that she is the woman of his dreams and no matter what life throws at them next, he wants to be there to stand by her side.

The Plan:

That Friday, Mike and Michelle were scheduled to go on the early morning tour with the Pride of Maui. Captain Tiffany happens to be one of my friends, so the first clue for their scavenger hunt was to be delivered by her after their snorkeling adventure had ended.

From there, they would head back to Honua Kai and get ready–their next clue was also waiting. From Honua Kai they would leave to go to Barnes and Noble to find their next clue.

Hidden in her favorite book, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, was her third clue that would take them to Sugar Beach Bake Shop to pick up some sparkling juice and a picnic basket filled with goodies.

The last clue led them to White Rock Beach, where a romantic blanket was set out and the proposal was set to happen!

The Proposal:

After arriving at White Rock, Mike took his time to proposing to Michelle. He had told her that he wasn’t going to propose that trip, but wanted to do something romantic. She bought it hook, line, and sinker. Because, as she put it, Mike always says what he means.

After 20 minutes of enjoying their picnic, he led her to the water’s edge where he slowly got down on to one knee and asked her to marry him. Now, I was far away and don’t know exactly what was said, but it really looked like she was in shock–after a brief moment, to catch her breath no doubt, she said YES!

The Engagement Session:

We stayed on White Rock Beach for the remainder of our session. We made sure to get plenty of candid fun photos on the beach, but also some on the romantic picnic that the Bespoke ladies had set up!

Mike and Michelle: All of us–from Pride of Maui, Honua Kai, Barnes and Noble, Sugar Beach Bake Shop, Bespoke Destination Events and Engaged on Maui–were so honored to be a part of your incredibly sweet proposal. Your story of love, dedication, and perseverance is one we won’t soon forget.
