Is a Haleakala Proposal Right for You?

Haleakala National Park encompasses over 30,000 acres of land, ranging from the coastal area of Kipahulu filled with lush jungle and waterfalls soaring up through 6 of the world’s 14 climate zones to the summit of Maui’s dormant volcano.

The name Haleakala means “house of the sun.” Legend has it that the demigod Maui, who the island is named after, went out to capture the sun after his mother Hina complained that the days were too short for her to dry out her kapa (bark cloth). Maui went to the peak of the mountain and waited to the sun to rise from the crater. The legend begins to differ a little here, but basically Maui snared the sun with his lasso and only let it go after it agreed to travel slower for half the year. This agreement allowed Hawaii to have its seasons of winter and summer. Hawaiians enjoyed a longer growing season and Hina was able to dry out her kapa.

Haleakala Crater is a giant shield volcano that takes up three-quarters of Maui’s 727 square miles (1,170 km) and rises up to 10,023 feet (3,005 m) above sea level. The summit’s high elevation, lack of environmental pollution, and ever-changing weather patterns make it an ideal place to view the sky. In fact, astronomers come from all over the world to observe and research.

Sunrises and sunsets at Haleakala Crater can be absolutely breathtaking! The view, along with the feeling of being on top of the world, makes Haleakala an epic proposal location on Maui. However, there are a few things you should be aware of to determine if this is the best place for you and your sweetie!

There will be other people around

Haleakala is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Maui. If you are interested in proposing at the Haleakala summit at sunrise, you will have an audience. If you are open to somewhere other than the summit, there are certain spots on the crater that tend to be less busy. However, we do need to respect park rules and stay within boundaries at all times.

We do our very best to capture you at angles where other people are not in the background, but in reality, people are there. Sometimes we have to crop the photo so you won’t see everyone else around. Other times, we work photoshop magic.

Requirements for Haleakala sunrise

Due to the popularity of sunrise viewing at the summit and limited parking, Haleakala National Park reservations are required for every vehicle entering the park from 3:00 am to 7:00 am. Reservations open two months in advance and often sell out very quickly. Another batch of tickets is opened up two days before the scheduled date. Tickets are $1.50 per vehicle and must be purchased online ahead of time. They are not available up at the park entrance. If you cannot reserve a ticket and/or we cannot reserve a ticket for our photographer, we have to make plans for after sunrise.

We also have to file a permit for being able to take professional photos at Haleakala National Park. The permit process does take a while, so we need at least one month notice to make sure the permit can be filed in time.

Long drive

If you are staying in a resort area, it will likely take you at least two hours to drive from your hotel to Haleakala Summit. To ensure you get a good spot and are there on time, we will have you arrive an hour before sunrise. The good news is colors before daybreak are amazing. The bad news is you will have to be ready to leave your hotel by 2:30-3:30 in the morning, depending on the time of year and exactly where you’re driving from.

Poor cell phone service

We send you a detailed itinerary of the proposal plan. As long as you follow this plan, everything should go swimmingly. We know that stuff happens though, which can throw the plan off. Normally, you let us know and we try to make it work. However, cell phone service at Haleakala is spotty, so it might be hard to get in contact should we need to make any changes to the set plan.

Bundle up

Although we are on a tropical island, it is very cold at the summit. The temperature drops 3 degrees for every 1000 feet of elevation, so it’s about 30°F (or 17°C) colder than at sea level. Temperatures are often in the 40s F, but can dip below freezing.

We want you to be comfortable and safe, so you’ll need to wear layers, long pants, and covered shoes.

Haleakala weather is unpredictable

Weather moves really fast up at the crater and can be completely different from the rest of the island. The weather conditions frequently change throughout the day. It can be raining and covered in clouds and completely clear up to be gorgeous an hour later. If you’re doing a sunset proposal at Haleakala, watching these weather changes take place is nerve-wracking. If the weather cooperates, the colors are spectacular. Since we know Mother Nature likes to change her mind a lot at the crater, it’s a bit of a gamble.

It was cloudy during this proposal, but it cleared up right after.

In summary, if you want your proposal to be:

– in a more private atmosphere
– planned last minute
– close to your hotel or a romantic restaurant
– a time where your love will be dressed up
– in a location that will likely be sunny

Then Haleakala may not be the right Maui proposal location for you. But we have lots of other options we can discuss!

Sunset is a popular time to be on the beach. While there are definitely some beaches that tend to be less busy, timing can also help keep crowds down. If you envision a beach proposal and want the moment to be as private as possible, sunrise or early morning is going to be your best bet.

We can plan something that will fit seamlessly into already existing plans. For example, if you’re going on the Road to Hana, suggest getting an early start to make the most of your time and stopping to “eat breakfast on the beach” before the long stretch of driving. She’ll never suspect a thing!

2. You’ll be able to keep the romance going all day long with a Maui morning proposal

Getting down on your knee in the morning allows you to relax the rest of the day. It also gives you the chance to make your first day as an engaged couple super epic and memorable. Imagine celebrating your proposal with a horseback ride, helicopter tour, couples massage, or sunset sail AND being able to be in the moment because you won’t be nervous anymore.

Many of the best restaurants on Maui have gorgeous sunset views and to get prime seating, you have to make your reservation for when they open for dinner service. If you choose a sunset or morning proposal, your evening will be free to snag the best dinner seats. Make sure to tell the restaurant you’ll be celebrating your engagement!

These two lovebirds were in Oahu for their vacation, but Hongquan wanted the to propose on Maui.  He and Wen planned on travelling to Maui for a couple days of their trip, so he planned the proposal for while they were on island.  One of the priorities for Hongquan was a private beach and beautiful colors. We knew that a spectacular sunrise proposal on Maui can’t be beat, and he agreed!

THE PLAN:

It’s not always easy to get someone who is on vacation out of bed early enough to see the sunrise, but here on Maui, it’ll always be worth it!  Hongquan just needed to convince Wen to take a beautiful sunrise beach walk on the North Shore, and Engaged on Maui would take care of the rest of it!

THE PROPOSAL:

The sunrise was epic that morning!  The pinks and purples filled the skies as Wen and Hongquan walked the quiet beach.  At just the right time, he took her hand in his and dropped to one knee! He asked, she said “Yes!”  After they hugged it out for a minute, Hongquan pointed our photographer out, and Wen was so surprised!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We did a little exploring Maui’s North Shore with these two sweethearts.  One of our favorite moments of the morning was when we happened upon a HONU!  The sea turtle was so huge and was just hanging out on the sand. We just had to snap a photo of them with her!

Travis and Ali were from Michigan and were on Maui for their babymoon-adventure.  For their last big trip before they became parents, Travis thought a babymoon proposal in South Maui was the perfect addition to their trip!

THE PLAN:

Travis originally wanted a Haleakala proposal, but because Ali was pregnant, her doctor suggested that she not go up to the 10,000 foot mark.  So, we changed course and planned on a sunrise proposal on the North Shore.  The morning of the proposal was on its way and the North Shore was just dumping rain. At the last minute, we were able to seamlessly change it up.  We actually met at a South Maui location instead and enjoyed the colors of the sunrise from there.

THE PROPOSAL:

When they got to the South Maui beach, Travis led her out, and I was slyly following behind them.  He found the perfect place and dropped to one knee!  I captured every second of the proposal.  She was so surprised, and of course, she said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

During the engagement session, we got some amazing rainbows.  A HUGE honu (sea turtle) even popped out and we got to enjoy that Maui photobomb moment.  It was really great to photograph some folks from my home state.  We explored the area right around the proposal beach and came upon a lovely wooden boardwalk and got some beautiful sweetheart shots there. They were even willing to get wet for a couple shots!  I loved photographing these two who were up for anything, even while pregnant!

Ali and Travis:  Congratulations on your engagement (and your baby-to-be!).  So glad that the third location was the charm for your babymoon proposal in South Maui!

This beautiful couple came all the way from New Zealand for their cruisin’ in paradise proposal on Maui.  Antony and Alysia have been together for seven years, and they’ve traveled the world together.  He knew she wasn’t expecting a proposal on this trip since they were on Maui for someone else’s wedding.  Antony really wanted to do a morning sunrise proposal, which we highly recommend. Trust me when I say there is no better way to start the day than you proposing to your love at sunrise!

THE PLAN:

We had a few little raindrops just before the couple showed up, but luckily the skies cleared and we got these amazing blues on the north shore after that!  Maui is tricky like that!  You think the rain could ruin a photo shoot, but more often than not the rain makes for incredible images.  Either way, the rain, thankfully, passed us right by that morning! We even saw some turtle tracks when they showed up, which is always fun.

THE PROPOSAL:

For the big moment, Antony led her over to just the right spot.  Ready and waiting, Marie, our photographer, was poised in the bushes to capture the proposal!  When he found the right spot, Antony dropped to one knee, and Alysia was super surprised!  Adorably, he even planned out his shirt which said “Cruisin’ in Paradise”.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION

For the engagement shoot, Antony chose the Simple Proposal Package.  So, we just stayed on the one beach for about thirty minutes or so. The best part of the morning was that we had the beach completely to ourselves.  Honestly, I think people were scared away by those sprinkles.  Luckily, Antony was willing to take the risk, and it paid off!  To start the engagement session, Marie had the couple snuggle near the water, and she captured some gorgeous sweetheart shots! While we were on the beach, these two were having the best time together laughing throughout their session. At the end of the shoot, we found a beautiful tide pool with rocks perfect for sitting on and got some sweet images there, too!

The great thing about a sunrise proposal on the north shore is there are empty beaches, great colors in the sky, and the girl never expects it because it is early in the morning!  For this north shore proposal, we even had a message in a bottle!  This couple is just so sweet, and I couldn’t get enough of how this sorta-shy gal takes the cutest photos!

THE PLAN:

We planned that I would get there early to strategically place the message in a bottle on the beach with a poem Qin had written tucked inside.  Then, I’d jump into the bushes and wait until they arrived!  Qin, Yun, and a group of their friends would walk the beach at sunrise and come upon the bottle at just the right moment.

THE PROPOSAL:

The couple and their friends arrived and piled out of the cars.  As the group walked down the beach at sunrise, the others started to slow down and Qin and Yun carried on ahead of the rest. Soon, the lovebirds “stumbled” upon this message in a bottle, and she started to open it.  Suddenly, she realized what was going on, and Qin dropped to one knee!  The friends rushed to surround them and capture a few shots on their own. He asked her to marry him, and she said YES! She was so surprised! Yun was even more surprised when her new fiance pointed out the photographer hiding in the bushes.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

From there we started the engagement session.  We stayed at the north shore proposal beach for a bit and then headed further north to get some variation with some greenery and lava rock.  We ended at Ho’okipa Beach Park so we could watch the surfers and get some shots out on the rocks. Ho’okipa gave us bright blue water and a glorious morning sky!

Qin and Yun, thank you so much for letting Engaged on Maui help you pull off your special day!  You had such a beautiful and romantic sunrise proposal on the north shore!

Sunrise proposals are some of my favorites. The early morning hours are so quiet and peaceful…and the beaches usually empty! When Josh said that he wanted to propose to Delanie at sunrise, I was completely on board!

THE PLAN:

The plan was for Josh to tell Delanie they were going to watch the sun rise over South Maui early in the morning. He led her to the spot, laid down a blanket, and waited for first morning’s light to peak over the mountain.

THE PROPOSAL:

As soon as the sun came up over the mountain, Josh got down on one knee. I loved the look on Delanie’s face! They had been together nearly a decade and this had been a long time coming (look for the shot further down in the post with her promise ring and then her engagement ring)!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Since this was a Simple Sunset (Sunrise) Session, we stayed in the vicinity of the proposal for a quick 30 minute photo session! We got a few shots on the cliff and the lava rocks below (which are some of my favorite spots). We ended on the beach for a few photos! The location was beautiful and pristine and Josh and Delanie could scoot off to breakfast to begin their best day ever!

If you ask Manny and Cristina how they met, they’ll tell you they met at church. Of course, that’s not the whole story, but I will leave it up to them to tell the rest at their own discretion. Manny reached out to me wanting to surprise Cristina with a proposal during their family photography session in Makena. This surprise proposal at Makena Cove in Maui took a little bit of finesse and a whole lot of go-with-the-flow. But in the end, Cristina’s reaction was so worth it!

THE PLAN:

The plan was that we would begin the photo session like a typical family session and within the first 5 minutes, I would cue Manny and that would be his gateway to propose. After the proposal, we would finish the rest of our session as an engagement/family session!

THE PROPOSAL:

Manny had put the ring in my camera bag ahead of time so I had to get Cristina to turn around so I could give it to him when the time was right. I positioned her and slipped the ring to Manny. Then I backed up, said the cue, and watched it unfold! There were definitely some tears…but she said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We stayed over by Makena Cove and the surrounding area. The morning was absolutely gorgeous and we had the whole place to ourselves!

This proposal is one of those proposals that will go down in my book as one of the most fun proposals I have photographed–not to mention one of the most beautiful. This cliffside sunrise proposal in Maui had bright blue water, a stunning sunrise, and an amazing reaction from Sikta!

THE PLAN:

Hetal wanted to have the location all to themselves, so I knew that a sunrise proposal was really what he was looking for. After going back and forth with a few locations, he chose this beautiful cliff in South Maui. I got there at the crack of dawn, hunkered down behind a bush, and waited.

THE PROPOSAL:

As soon as Hetal and Sikta got up there, he wasted no time. The colors in the sky were perfect and the moment was right. He got down on one knee and she was absolutely blown away! She said yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Once Sikta learned that we were going to do a full on engagement session, she didn’t want to hold back one.single.ounce. of her love for Hetal. The result was some pretty amazing candids in the ocean at the end of our session! We went to lots of different locations down in South Maui and had an absolute blast.

Sikta and Hetal: Thank you for allowing me to take part in such a special moment in your lives. I absolutely loved your cliffside sunrise proposal in Maui. That coupled with our AMAZING engagement session made for the perfect morning! Once again, congratulations!

Jack and Brooke’s story is one like I haven’t heard before. They met when they were 12…playing an online video game. I know, it sounds like something out of a teen romance novel–but seeing these two together, you can tell they were totally meant to be! I was so excited to shoot this sunrise breakfast proposal at the Westin Kaanapali!

The Plan:

Jack had already set up his special sunrise breakfast at the Westin Kaanapali and between the waiter and Anna the coordinator, a plan was hatched.

The Proposal:

When the time was right, the waiter placed the ring in some flowers and delivered it as Brooke’s special dessert. Meanwhile, I was laying in wait on the ocean side of the breakfast spot (and I got some really weird looks from folks). The look on Brooke’s face was priceless when her “dessert” was brought out.

The Engagement Session:

Originally, we had planned to go to the jungle and a beach out in West Maui, but the weather dictated otherwise. But the good news was that this session was just laced with rainbows. Every place we went it felt like there was another rainbow! Jack and Brooke even rain through the rain for a few shots, which just so happen to be my absolute favorite.

Jack and Brooke: I feel so honored you chose me to capture your romantic sunrise breakfast proposal at the Westin Kaanapali. I still can’t get over how many rainbows there were–it really was a perfect morning!
