Andy and Joy are a little different from many of the couples we work with. This will be the second marriage for both of them, and their story is a reminder that love doesn’t follow a single timeline. When Andy first shared their story with us, it was clear how much respect and admiration he had for Joy. The two met nearly ten years ago at work in a setting that wasn’t exactly designed for romance. Joy was an attorney representing the department in a lawsuit, and Andy worked in law enforcement as the subject matter expert for the case. Their first interaction was professional, an interview for the case, but once the conversation started, it simply never stopped.

The Plan

The bright blooms added warmth and personality, reflecting the joy and energy that Andy described in their relationship.

At the center of the setup were glowing “Marry Me” marquee letters, positioned perfectly so that Joy would see them as soon as they reached the overlook. The combination of the dramatic view, the colorful flowers, and the soft glow of the letters created a setting that felt both romantic and playful.

The plan was simple: Andy would guide Joy down the pathway as if they were simply exploring the area together. When they reached the overlook and the proposal setup came into view, he would pause, share what was on his heart, and ask the question he had been waiting years to ask.

What made this proposal particularly meaningful was the history behind it.

For many years, Andy and Joy lived five hours apart. Their children were settled in their respective hometowns, so relocating right away wasn’t an option.

Instead, they made long distance work.

When Brandon first reached out to Engaged on Maui, his timeline was short. Four days, to be exact. From initial contact to proposal day, we had less than a week to bring everything together. While that doesn’t allow for every elaborate detail or over-the-top installation, it doesn’t have to. Sometimes, sweet and simple is exactly what a love story needs.

And for Brandon and Alexis, simple was perfect.

Their story started when they were just 13 years old. Alexis was Brandon’s first serious girlfriend. “As serious as you can get at 13,” he joked. But even at that age, he knew he felt something different about her. She was all he could think about. He would catch the bus across town just to see her. They spent a year together before going to different high schools, and life naturally pulled them in different directions.

In the years that followed, Brandon joined the military and left home. Thirteen years passed without seeing or speaking to Alexis. Then one night, back in their hometown, they ran into each other. The connection was immediate. What they felt at 13 hadn’t disappeared, it had simply been waiting.

They first met in medical school. Just classmates at first. He noticed her immediately. Her beauty stood out, but he assumed their worlds would never cross. Different friend groups. Different paths. Then, by coincidence, they ended up on the same ophthalmology rotation. That changed everything.

Kris and Sophie’s romantic Maui beach proposal was a dream come true. Set against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset and adorned with an abundance of vibrant red roses. As light danced on the waves, Kris knelt in the soft sand, asking Sophie to spend forever together. Kris and Sophie met in high school and have been together for 6 years. So this summer trip to Maui was the perfect time to pop the question!

THE PLAN:

Kris was super flexible in his proposal plans! He mentioned a beach proposal filled with roses. Simple and romantic, a perfect combo! So we picked the date that would work best for them while they visited Maui. After setting a date and time, I met them at one of our favorite beaches. At this point, all that was left to do was propose.

THE PROPOSAL:

Sophie was shocked as they walked in between rows of red roses and Kris got down on one knee. The evening was warm, inviting, and a perfect golden glow was wrapped around them. After the initial shock wore off, we took some photos with the red roses and let them walk along the shore for a mini engagement photoshoot. Then when the sun had set, we took out the flash and had some fun with the blue hue of the sky. But it was an absolutely perfect day for this very sweet couple. So the start of their forever begins!

Justin and Allie’s perfect oceanfront Maui picnic proposal came to life after Justin had sent us a message with all of his dreams and plans. Justin wanted to go big. He did not want to hold anything back when it came to impressing Allie. These two lovebirds met on a dating app in 2020 and the rest was history. When they booked their trip to Maui, Justin knew this was the perfect time to pop the question.

THE PLAN:

Justin came forward and wanted something extravagant to walk Allie towards, so the ‘Marry Me’ letters and a bunch of romantic florals seemed like the perfect fit. He preferred a late afternoon or evening proposal so he could give Allie the most romantic dinner afterwards. Photos and videos were super important so we made sure to capture it all happening.

THE PROPOSAL:

The day-of was magical—with the big Marry Me letters framed by lush floral arrangements set against the backdrop of the shimmering ocean.

Allie said yes, and the couple celebrated with a dreamy picnic filled with laughter, love, and picture-perfect moments. Afterward, we captured their joy with a mini engagement session on the beach, the golden hour light perfectly complementing their radiant smiles.

What You Can Do

Small-Scale Proposal Setups: Engaged on Maui specializes in creating magical moments, like intimate proposals on the beach. Small setups, placing an item on the beach or some flowers, are generally allowed with the right permits. Keep the footprint minimal and temporary to blend in with the natural beauty of the surroundings.

• Example: Setting up a heart of petals on the sand is fine as long as it’s easy to clean up and doesn’t interfere with the public’s use of the beach.

Beach Photography: Capturing the moment when someone says “yes” is what Engaged on Maui does best. As we always follow DLNR rules and regulations, your photographer will have a permit!

We always make sure to leave the beach exactly as we found it—pristine and untouched. If you have a larger setup like the one below, we will have someone on site to clean up afterward. If you have a smaller set up, like an orchid flower circle, your photographer and you will clean up (and use for more photos!)

Small Gatherings: Planning a small engagement party on the beach? With the right permits, you can set up a low-key celebration. And what we mean by lowkey celebration is that you can have up to 30 people on the beach as is covered by our permit

What You Can’t Do

Large-Scale Events: If you’re thinking about hosting a big event, like a HUGE post-proposal party with dozens of guests, elaborate decorations, or multiple vendors, this falls into the large-scale category. Permits are impossible to get for these sorts of events.

Permanent or Semi-Permanent Structures: Any plans to install structures like an arch or a large canopy on the beach? These are not allowed for commercial activity. Hawaii’s beaches are meant to remain natural and accessible to all, so keep things light and temporary. This also includes beach picnic setups with teepees and large umbrellas.

Table and chairs for beach dinners: Beach dinners are prohibited in Hawaii. All sand is state land, and these are not approved by DLNR. For private dinners we suggest Hotel Wailea or The Four Seasons Wailea.

Respect the Environment and Community

David and Jules are from the same town, went to same high school, and have friends of friends in common but were brought together by Tinder. They clicked instantly.

David was actually in Honolulu after their first few dates, and as much as he loved Hawaii, he couldn’t wait to return home to see Jules again. Shortly after returning from Hawaii, David asked Jules to be his girlfriend and “it’s been heaven ever since.”

It only made sense to come back to Hawaii, together this time, so David could ask Jules another very important question.

THE PLAN:

David came to us saying, “We are both very good at ruining each other’s surprises so if I, with your help, can pull this off it will be amazing.” We couldn’t wait to help him orchestrate his surprise proposal!

Jules had already given David the diamond she wanted. She also made it very clear she didn’t want a ton of people around. Jules knew the question was coming. She just didn’t know when or how.

David wanted both photography and videography, so our Storyteller Package was the way to go.

David knew Jules would love a beach proposal ending at sunset. He chose a nice, long beach, just right for a romantic stroll on their anniversary.

THE PROPOSAL:

Our photographer Amber and videographer Cyrus got to the beach and found a beautiful spot for the proposal. Knowing Jules wanted more privacy, they walked a little further down the beach to get away from other people. Then they placed a marker to make it easy for David to find the spot.

David followed all of the instructions we gave him. He especially made sure Jules was facing the cameras for the proposal moment so we could capture her reaction. The plan worked perfectly!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

With our Storyteller Proposal, our photographer and videographer work together to make sure they are each getting the footage they need during the engagement session. The result is a stunning gallery of images and an engagement film so you can see it all in motion set to music.

Some couples are shy about being lovey dovey in front of the camera. PDA just isn’t their thing – and that’s okay! But David and Jules were so happy. Their gallery is filled with affection and kisses and we’re all about it!

THE PLAN:

Francis was truly a dream client, easygoing and open to suggestions. He decided on a beach proposal at sunrise. Some of the biggest perks of this timing is that you often have a very quiet beach. If you’re lucky, you also get to experience beautiful colors in the sky.

Our concerns are that it is early. Sunrise colors are fleeting at sunrise, so timing is important. Since it’s early, there’s less of an excuse to be dressed up. For some couples, this timing doesn’t really work. But when it is a good fit – we say got for it!

Francis and Brianna are both early risers. She’s also relaxed and he thought she would love it. Francis was completely right. A sunrise beach proposal was perfect for them!

THE PROPOSAL:

Francis and Brianna walked out on the beach in South Maui. With the palm trees, Mauna Kahālāwai, and soft morning light in the background, he asked her to marry him. It’s easy to see the joy and love on Brianna’s face as she is saying yes.

Francis did an amazing job of staying down on one knee for a while. This allowed their photographer Tenessa to capture lots of great photos of the proposal.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Francis and Brianna took a few moments soaking in their newly engaged status before acknowledging Tenessa so she could get beautiful candids right after their proposal. Then they had fun walking down the beach, playing in the shoreline, and loving on each other.

Francis’ mom contacted us to surprise them with leis and a bottle of champagne as a congratulations gift from his family. Alcohol isn’t allowed on the beach, so they were able to take the bottle with them to enjoy later, but of course we made sure to get a few pictures of the champagne first. We loved this extra touch because Francis had told us of Brianna’s special connection with his mom saying, “I fell in love with her within weeks of our first date -over vulnerable and connecting phone calls- I knew she was the one when she joined me on a 10 day adventure last summer in which celebrating milestones for us both culminated in planning a brunch for my mom on mother’s day. Seeing the two of them interact solidified my desire to have her be the person that I did life with forever.”

After talking to Sashi on the phone, we figured out that it would be cool to set up a small bookshelf with assorted books on it. Sashi would create a plan so that he and Brittney would already be spending the special day in the area. Then it would be natural for him to suggest they head to the beach right before sunset.

The cover story was that this eclectic character who had a passion for reading sets up this little shelf of books on the beach for people to enjoy every week. We decided it would be best to actually have a fake librarian there to add authenticity of the story and invite Brittney to take a look if she seemed hesitant. We created some details that our fake librarian could talk about just in case Brittney asked.

Because we were setting up a bigger prop on the beach, it was super important to pick the right location and time. We didn’t want tons of other curious beachgoers to check out the beach library. In order to give the proposal the greatest chance of privacy, we did not want to set up on any beaches nearby the hotels or do the proposal on a weekend. We suggested a spot that would most likely be more secluded and make sense for our cover story. Sashi was very go-with-the-flow and happy to hand over the reins to let us take over the planning. Thinking about these details and setting you up for success is a big part of what we do!

THE PROPOSAL:

Sashi and Brittney showed up right on time. Just as we hoped, the beach was quiet and the lighting was beautiful! Brittney was pretty psyched to see this cute little beach library set up. Angie, the owner of Engaged on Maui, acted as our fake librarian while our associate photographer Amber waited on the sidelines, capturing everything.

The original plan was for Sashi to send us a special book to place on the shelf, which he would find and present to Brittney right before he proposed. But by the time the book was finished, it would have been cutting it close to guarantee that it would be shipped to us in time. Instead, Sashi kept the book and took it out from his bag.

We love the shot where you can see Sashi holding the book behind his back and the moment that Brittney opens it and has the first hint of what’s coming.

Sashi led Brittney a tad closer to the ocean and then got down on one knee. Angie stepped away to give them more privacy. While we couldn’t hear exactly what was said, it was clear that Brittney was overjoyed!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After some hugs, kisses, and admiring her new engagement ring, Sashi pointed out the photographer and Brittney realized it was all a set up! Brittney was definitely shocked and surprised. Seeing that moment of realization is sometimes almost as good as the proposal itself.

Brittney and Sashi are really natural and comfortable together. They had so much fun just walking, playing, and loving it up on the beach. We had a blast witnessing their newly-engaged joy as the sun went down.

Surprise Tropical Proposal for a Dream Vow Renewal

Enrico and Serena are already married. They are high school sweethearts from a little town in Sicily, Italy. After university, Enrico moved to San Francisco for work. Serena followed him a few years later and they got legally married in the United States so Serena could stay.

They never had the opportunity to have a wedding with all of their friends and family. Enrico knew Serena still dreamed of the perfect Sicilian wedding. This time around, he really wanted to plan a stunning proposal and knew Maui was just the time he had been waiting for. We couldn’t have been more excited to help pull off this surprise proposal for a dream vow renewal!

THE PLAN:

The nice thing about the couple already being married is that the proposal will most likely be completely unexpected. But Enrico still wanted to make sure the plan sounded natural. He is very passionate about photography and loves to take sunset landscape photos of the ocean.

The plan was for Enrico to bring Serena to the beach with the excuse that it was a beautiful spot to take landscape photos. He would ask her to pose watching the ocean so her back would be to his camera. Once she turned around, he would be on one knee with the ring.

THE PROPOSAL:

Enrico picked a gorgeous wide open beach. There is nowhere on this beach for the photographer to hide, so our associate photographer Tenessa waited a little further down and pretended to be another tourist taking photos. Serena was completely thrilled by the surprise proposal and had no idea Tenessa was there!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Instead of driving to another place, we decided to stay at the same beach until sunset. This spot is a great combination of greenery with palm trees in the background and rugged dark lava rocks. We loved that Enrico and Serena were game to explore all over the beach with us and even dip their feet in the water for some engagement photos in the shore break. We had so much fun that it was sunset before we knew it! A few streaks of bright pink matching Serena’s dress came out in the sky that night. It was the perfect new beginning for this sweet couple!
