Gorgeous Northwest Maui Beach Proposal

Dillon wanted beautiful scenery for his proposal to sweetheart Emily. We talked about the pros and cons of a Haleakala proposal versus a beach proposal. In the end, Dillon loved the idea of doing a day of sightseeing followed by a walk on the beach where he could propose before a romantic dinner.

THE PLAN:

Dillon asked for beach recommendations nearby their hotel in Kaanapali and was drawn to the look of this wide-open beach. Our associate Amber would be waiting for them towards the entrance, pretending to be another beachgoer. As they passed by her, she would discreetly get into place to capture the big moment.

THE PROPOSAL:

Originally, we planned to use the left side of the beach. However when Amber arrived, that area was crowded. She quickly texted Dillon that he should go to the right instead and placed their orchid flower circle so he knew exactly where to go.

Amber’s quick thinking ensured that Dillon and Emily’s engagement happened on their own section of beach. Plus, it was a great reminder of why we love using long beaches that have ample space.

Emily was thrilled at Dillon’s beautifully planned beach proposal and was even more surprised that he had a photographer there!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

At first, it was gorgeous and sunny on the beach. A raincloud came by and the sky got dark. We had a few sprinkles and suddenly an amazing double rainbow appeared. It was the perfect time to head to our second location, where we escaped the rain and ended with a sunset dance along the shoreline.

Rachel reached out to me and she wanted to do an off the beaten path proposal for her sweetie, Victoria.  They were coming all the way from New Zealand.  She wanted something that looked like Hawaii, but didn’t want the postcard-look Hawaii.  So after going back and forth over a couple different options, we chose this remote secret cliffside proposal in Northwest Maui.

THE PLAN:

Rachel said both she and Victoria are rather adventurous, so it was no problem to get Victoria down to the cliff.  It’s a bit of a hike to get down there.  She also sent me a box in the mail to set up on a different location out by the cliff. The box had a heart lock on it, and Rachel would give Victoria the key after the proposal.

THE PROPOSAL:

The ladies hiked down to the spot where we planned, and I started snapping away.  As soon as they got down there, Rachel dropped to her knee and popped the question!  Victoria was so surprised!  She of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After the proposal was done, we were able to go to where we placed the box and get some cool shots of them opening the box.  Then we went to the jungle in that same area to add some greenery to their session.  And finally, we ended up on one of our favorite beaches in Northwest Maui.  This proposal was actually featured in Huffington Post (the ladies are #13…and as long as you’re there check out #6, too!)!

This Montage Kapalua Bay Proposal happened early morning.  This proposal was more of a spontaneous proposal.  We’d share a signal to show we were there, and then follow him until he chose just the right spot to pop the question.

THE PLAN:

When Michael contacted me, he knew that he wanted an unscripted proposal.  He needed to be able to call the shots.  So, a spontaneous proposal was just right for him.  They were having brunch at Merriman’s later that morning, so he told Nicole that they were just going to walk to the restaurant.  As soon as the couple left their hotel, we followed them to where he ultimately proposed.

THE PROPOSAL:

They were a touch late getting to the site, but honestly, that was fine.  We’d always rather have them be a little late than a little early.  We don’t want them to beat the photographer there!  Michael and Nicole strolled along the grass until he found just the right spot.  It was a gorgeous scene with the ocean behind them and the coconut trees surrounding them.  He paused for a moment and then dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.  She said YES!  They shared some smooches and then he pointed out that he hired Engaged on Maui to photograph the engagement and have a photo shoot immediately following the proposal.  She was blown away!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Morning is such a great time to do a photo shoot. Of course, morning light always offers up vibrant blues and greens, which is gorgeous.  He led her down on the lava rocks in that area, and we got some shots there.  The wind was blowing her dress just right to add a beautiful element to these images.  This couple was so gorgeous together, we could have had them go anywhere and they would’ve looked fantastic!

These Australians came to Maui looking for adventure.  Cameron knew that he wanted somewhere spectacular to pop the question to Evie.  We went back and forth several times trying to find the exact right location for them.  Cameron felt like he wanted to ask her to marry him in this gorgeous, picturesque Northwest Maui cliff proposal.

THE PLAN:

We planned for Cameron to lead Evie to this incredible cliff side in Northwest Maui on a pre-sunset adventure.  She was up for any beautiful spot the island had to offer, so it was easy to get here there.  Once they got there, Cameron was going to lead her to a spot on the rocks and he’d ask her there!

THE PROPOSAL:

They got to the site about a half hour before sunset and our associate photographer, Chantelle, spotted them right away.  They walked hand in hand towards the edge of the cliff, and Cameron slowed down just before they got to the spot.  When he was ready, he dropped to one knee and asked Evie to marry him.  She was so surprised and of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

One super romantic gesture from Cameron (you know, besides the incredibly romantic proposal) was that he brought Evie a change of clothes for their photo shoot after he proposed.  I thought this was so sweet and thoughtful.  While I love my husband, I know he wouldn’t have thought of that!  We had an incredible sunset that evening on the rocks.  We had the beach mainly to ourselves and the light was pretty incredible.

Matt and Jackie were on island from California and were ready for anything in their Northwest Maui rain or shine proposal.  Matt wanted to propose to Jackie in a place where we hadn’t had a proposal before.  We knew exactly the location for them which was over in Northwest Maui on a secluded cliff.  We were a little worried about the rain that day.  Northwest Maui tends to be a little rainier than other locations on island.  And….we had some rain squalls coming through.  Rain can either be a photographers nightmare or a dream come true.  Thankfully, Matt was a dream client in his attitude about the weather!

THE PLAN:

We were in contact with Matt throughout the day, and we left the final decision for the day’s events up to him.  He was enthusiastic in his response that even if it rained, it would just add to their proposal story.  Amazing, right?  We loved his attitude about that!  Luckily, the rain ended up passing, and we even had a rainbow in the distance right before Matt and Jackie showed up.

THE PROPOSAL:

Once Matt and Jackie arrived, the proposal happened quickly!  As soon as they got there, Matt led her over to the spot he would propose.  Chantelle, one of our associate photographers, was in place, ready for action. Matt dropped to one knee, and of course Jackie said yes! Jackie was so happy and just kept wrapping Matt up in hugs!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Once Jackie spotted our photographer, Chantelle started shooting the engagement session.  We got an incredible sunset that night!  We loved setting up the proposal in this spot because of how secluded it is.  The blue water, the rocks, and the beach location right below made for a gorgeous setting for their engagement photos!

In Derrek’s initial email, he told me that he and his soon-to-be fiance are always ready for an adventure.  With that description, I knew just where to set up their engagement!  There is a fun hike with an incredible Banyan tree that would perfectly frame this jungle proposal in Northwest Maui.  As soon as Derrek heard about this location, he knew it was where he wanted propose to his lady.

THE PLAN:

Since they were an adventurous couple, Derrek and I had planned that he would take Michelle on a great hike in Northwest Maui.  We planned that was once they were in front of the giant Banyan tree, he’d drop to one knee and propose.  I would wait in the bushes and start photographing as soon as I saw them coming down the path.

THE PROPOSAL:

In any good proposal there will be a little hiccup that we just have to roll with.  The jungle proposal’s hiccup was the muddy trail!  Michelle was such a trooper, and like Derrek said, she was up for anything.  A hike in the mud didn’t faze her.  I was hidden away and saw them coming down the muddy path, Michelle in her “slippahs” (on Maui we call flip flops “slippers”) and Derrek barefoot leading her to the gigantic tree.  As soon as he got there, he took a deep breath, dropped to one knee, and popped the question.  She was thrilled!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

For the engagement session, we took our first set of pictures in the jungle before we headed to a nearby cliff overlooking the ocean as our second location.  These two couldn’t keep their hands off each other during their photo shoot!  They are so in love!  We got terrific photos with their the reflections in the tide pools and some as they danced in the waves!  We ended the session with a surprise find: tropical trees decked in Christmas lights.
