They first met in medical school. Just classmates at first. He noticed her immediately. Her beauty stood out, but he assumed their worlds would never cross. Different friend groups. Different paths. Then, by coincidence, they ended up on the same ophthalmology rotation. That changed everything.

He saw how intelligent she was. How calm she made him feel. How natural conversation felt with her. But timing didn’t cooperate. Life pulled them in different directions, and they didn’t speak for two years.

Until one day, she reached out. She asked to study together in the library. Just like that, everything clicked again. The connection felt the same as it did years earlier. They started texting every day. Studying together. Spending time together. Then he took her to the Kansas prairies so she could see the night sky for the first time.

That night, they shared their first hug and they’ve been together ever since.

Nearly three years later, he still feels lucky every day. He admires her heart, her strength, and her story. She grew up in the desert of China, where water felt rare and precious. Because of that, she always dreamed of the ocean. She talked about beaches often and how much she loved the water. So when he started planning his proposal, he knew exactly where it need to happen.

The Plan

When he reached out to Engaged on Maui, he already had a vision. He wanted something simple but meaningful. Romantic but not overdone. Elegant, natural, and personal.

He didn’t want a flashy setup. No giant signs or distractions. Just her. The ocean. And something that reflected her love for water and beauty.

We suggested a Maui beach proposal with orchids because orchids symbolize love, strength, and beauty. They also feel soft, romantic, and timeless. Perfect for the kind of proposal he had in mind.

He wanted the moment to feel calm and intentional. And most of all, he wanted her to feel seen.

We worked together to choose the right beach. One with gentle waves, open space, and a peaceful atmosphere. We planned the timing around sunset so the light would feel warm and flattering.

Golden hour in Maui always delivers.

We designed a floral setup using orchids and soft neutral tones. Nothing loud. Nothing overwhelming. Just enough to frame the moment.

Because this was her first time in Hawaii, we planned the proposal to feel natural. No pressure. No forced moments. Just a walk on the beach that turned into something unforgettable. We added in a little message in a bottle for Shunshun to find. Aaron wrote a heartfelt letter for her to read after asking the big question.

Behind the scenes, we handled everything. Location planning. Timing. Photography. Setup. He only had to focus on one thing… asking the question.

The Proposal

As the sun started to lower, he led her down the beach. She thought they were just going for a walk on the beach. Then she saw the orchids and a tiny message in a bottle that was in the middle of the circle.

She slowed down. Confused at first. Then curious. Then emotional. When she realized what was happening, she was shocked.

He took her hands and told her how much she meant to him. He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Obviously, she said yes! They hugged and opened the message in a bottle together. She was in disbelief.

Tears came fast. Smiles came faster. The ocean rolled in behind them while the sky glowed. And for a moment, the world felt very small in the best way.

This Maui beach proposal with orchids wasn’t about spectacle. It was about meaning and honoring her love for water. Her childhood dreams. Their slow-burn love story.

After the proposal, they took time to breathe. They laughed, played in the flowers, ran around on the beach, and took it all in.

We captured their engagement photos right after. No rushing or pressure. Just two people newly engaged, standing on a Maui beach with the ocean at their feet.

Mark and Alex’s perfect proposal on Maui was filled with the prettiest yellow and white roses arranged in a heart, a gorgeous sunset, and a whole lot of laughter. This floral setup was one of our favorites for 2024. It’s simple, romantic, and stunning for proposal photos!

THE PLAN:

Mark reached out to us when they planned their trip to Maui in March. He has family that lives here in Maui and he knew he wanted to pop the question while they were visiting one of his favorite places. Alex and Mark were celebrating their 2 year anniversary and he knew it would be the perfect time to reach out and get a proposal plan going.

THE PROPOSAL:

Alexandria had no idea what Mark had planned when they strolled along the Maui beach at sunset. When they approached the heart-shaped arrangement of white and yellow roses in the sand, she lost it. Mark was down on one knee, holding out the ring that would change their lives forever. Her surprise quickly turned into happy tears as she said “yes” to forever with the waves crashing behind them. It was a moment of pure magic and love.

Bryce and Brianna’s love story found its perfect next chapter on the golden sands of Maui. Visiting the island for a dreamy getaway, Bryce knew he wanted to make their trip unforgettable by asking Brianna to spend forever with him. With the sound of gentle waves and the warm glow of a Maui sunset setting the stage, he planned a simple yet heartfelt beach proposal that was nothing short of magical. It was a moment filled with love, anticipation, and the beauty of Hawaii, creating memories they’ll treasure forever.

THE PLAN:

We had a lot of wiggle room when it came to this proposal. Bryce and Brianna had no big plans, so a romantic sunset proposal was easy. It was easy to pick from one of our favorite spots and set a meeting time just before the sun started to set.

THE PROPOSAL:

For the proposal, Bryce took Brianna to the designated beach while I hid behind some foliage. She was absolutely shocked that he got down on one knee and pulled out a wooden box with a ring. Brianna’s reaction was pure joy—a mix of surprise, happy tears, and laughter that made the moment feel even more special. After she said yes, it was time to capture their excitement in a series of candid and heartfelt photos. The Maui sunset creating the perfect romantic backdrop for their first moments as an engaged couple.

What better way to start your day than pledging a promise of forever with the one you love? Francis and Brianna had a South Maui sunrise proposal with beautiful colors, an empty beach, and even a surprise from his family!

THE PLAN:

Francis was truly a dream client, easygoing and open to suggestions. He decided on a beach proposal at sunrise. Some of the biggest perks of this timing is that you often have a very quiet beach. If you’re lucky, you also get to experience beautiful colors in the sky.

Our concerns are that it is early. Sunrise colors are fleeting at sunrise, so timing is important. Since it’s early, there’s less of an excuse to be dressed up. For some couples, this timing doesn’t really work. But when it is a good fit – we say got for it!

Francis and Brianna are both early risers. She’s also relaxed and he thought she would love it. Francis was completely right. A sunrise beach proposal was perfect for them!

THE PROPOSAL:

Francis and Brianna walked out on the beach in South Maui. With the palm trees, Mauna Kahālāwai, and soft morning light in the background, he asked her to marry him. It’s easy to see the joy and love on Brianna’s face as she is saying yes.

Francis did an amazing job of staying down on one knee for a while. This allowed their photographer Tenessa to capture lots of great photos of the proposal.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Francis and Brianna took a few moments soaking in their newly engaged status before acknowledging Tenessa so she could get beautiful candids right after their proposal. Then they had fun walking down the beach, playing in the shoreline, and loving on each other.

Francis’ mom contacted us to surprise them with leis and a bottle of champagne as a congratulations gift from his family. Alcohol isn’t allowed on the beach, so they were able to take the bottle with them to enjoy later, but of course we made sure to get a few pictures of the champagne first. We loved this extra touch because Francis had told us of Brianna’s special connection with his mom saying, “I fell in love with her within weeks of our first date -over vulnerable and connecting phone calls- I knew she was the one when she joined me on a 10 day adventure last summer in which celebrating milestones for us both culminated in planning a brunch for my mom on mother’s day. Seeing the two of them interact solidified my desire to have her be the person that I did life with forever.”

Picking the right proposal location was key for Shing. We went over several options before he decided on The Treehouse at Hotel Wailea. He loved the beauty and privacy of the Treehouse and the lush grounds of Hotel Wailea. Most importantly, he knew this private treehouse proposal is just what his sweetie Tina would want!

THE PLAN:

Shing and Tina were staying at a different hotel, so they came to Hotel Wailea under the cover story that they would be having dinner at the restaurant. This plan was perfect because Shing knew Tina would want to have her hair and makeup just right for the proposal and photo session.

THE PROPOSAL:

Shing convinced Tina to walk around before their fake dinner reservations. He knew where the Treehouse was and started walking in that direction. We had a violinist waiting for them on the Treehouse steps. She began playing, so they would be intrigued to keep walking towards the Treehouse. Once the violinist saw Shing and Tina, she performed Canon in D.

Our photographer Angie sneakily followed Shing and Tina from behind. With the romantic music playing in the background, Shing got down on one knee and asked Tina to spend forever with him. Tina was ecstatic! Their reactions reminded us how much we love what we do!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Hotel Wailea is stunning! There is plenty of greenery and space to play. We had a short engagement session before leaving Shing and Tina to enjoy their private dinner in The Treehouse during sunset. Before we left, Shing got down on his knee one more time so they could relive the moment again!

When Stanley first contacted Engaged on Maui, he knew he wanted a “remote and scenic proposal.”  One of the hardest decisions was choosing between proposing during a helicopter tour, on a cliff, or at the beach.  Ultimately, this beach with its lava rocks and greenery caught his eye!  This long, sandy beach can actually get pretty crowded, especially if the surf is pumping.  However, sometimes you don’t need an empty beach, just a nice secluded corner for the big question.

THE PLAN:

With this location, it’s easy for the photographer to blend in with other beachgoers in plain sight.  In fact, you often walk right past her on the way to the proposal spot and she is able to get nice candid shots of the moments leading up to the proposal.

THE PROPOSAL:

Stanley led Kellie to the corner of the beach as planned.  He dropped down to one knee and she was overwhelmed with emotion, but of course said, “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Stanley and Kellie started off as friends. They had such a natural, comfortable connection that was easy to photograph. There were lots of laughs and playfulness on the beach that ended with a beautiful sunset!

Dan had all the main ideas in place for his personalized South Maui beach proposal to his high school sweetheart Camille.  He knew he wanted to propose on Camille’s favorite beach, involve her love of Disney, and have her family there as a bonus surprise.  He just needed our help to pull it off and, of course, capture the big moment!

THE PLAN:

Camille and her family are frequent Maui visitors and they have a special beach that has become their go-to spot.  This made it a little easier to get Camille down to the beach.  To make the proposal even more memorable, Dan added a couple extra surprises.  First, he sent us a Stitch-themed box filled with pictures and keepsakes for Camille to find on the beach before the proposal.  Second, he wanted Camille’s family to watch him pop the question.

THE PROPOSAL:

Family surprises are always fun, but have to be planned at the right location so there is a good place for family to hide without being spotted.  Luckily, Camille’s favorite beach has a beach path where our photographer Chantelle and Camille’s family could watch.  Camille found the Stitch box and then it was Dan’s time to shine.  He did a great job of facing Camille so everyone could see her reaction.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Dan had originally wanted to point out the photographer and the family surprise at the same time.  However, we convinced him to delay the family surprise for a bit.  We wanted Camille to have a little time to soak in the fact that she just got engaged to the love of her life.  We also wanted to give Chantelle a chance to get in a better position for close up reaction shots, especially since Camille had no idea her parents were going to be there!

Chantelle walked down to greet our couple and start their engagement session.  She asked them to face the ocean to start.  This was the family’s cue to get into place for the surprise.  When Camille turned around, boy was she surprised!  You could feel all the love and joy!  We were able to snap some lovely family photos.  Then Dan and Camille had their time for fun, romantic shots.  The timing was a little earlier than sunset to accommodate dinner reservations and flight times, but the lighting was still beautiful!  We loved seeing everything come together for this sweet couple!

When I saw the light this night, I knew it would have to get on the blog.  This breathtaking South Maui sunset proposal is exactly what people are looking for when they say they want a beach proposal at sunset.

THE PLAN:

Andrew and Adrienne met in a CPR class he was teaching for life guards.  During the four day class, he paid extra special attention to Adrienne.  When they started dating, they spent all their time at the beach because they were both lifeguards.  Because these two have so many special memories spent on a beach together watching sunsets, Andrew knew he had to propose on a beach.  At sunset, of course!

THE PROPOSAL:

As they walked down the beach at sunset, Andrew casually pointed out the islands they could see.  Finally, he got to just the right spot and positioned Adrienne perfectly for the proposal! But before he dropped down to one knee, he took her flip flops she was carrying and threw them off to the side.  He dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him.  She was so surprised and there were lots of beautiful tears!  Then he introduced us…..the photographers hiding in the bushes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We had a lovely engagement session on the beach and the sunset was out of this world!  The light was so amazing that evening and the bright blue water just popped!  Our photo session and their proposal was even published on the proposal website How He Asked so check it out!

Robert wanted to pop the question at sunset while they were on Maui.  We’ve just been having such beautiful sunsets lately, I knew he would be thrilled with this stunning sunset proposal in Wailea.  

THE PLAN:

At the pre-arranged time, Robert would take Alexis on a walk down the beautiful Wailea beach we had chosen together.  There was a little sandy spot encircled by lava rocks where he was going to propose. Our associate photographer Tenessa would be there ready and waiting behind some bushes to photograph them when they got there.

THE PROPOSAL:

When they got there, Robert guided Alexis to just the right spot.  Once they were there, he dropped to one knee! He proposed at sunset, and they had magnificent colors in the sky.  

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Right after the proposal we had a small engagement session right on the beach.  This white, sandy beach down in Wailea is hard to beat! We had just the right amount of sand at this location during this time of year.  At some times of the year, there is not as much sand here. But thankfully, we know how the seasons affect our beaches here on Maui and can plan proposal locations accordingly.  We also had these awesome lava rocks everywhere that made for some really cool diversity in the shoot. The lava rocks, the sunset, and the colors made Robert and Alexis’s proposal absolutely perfect.

These two lovebirds met while working in Luxembourg. Francesco moved from Luxembourg to London and within six months, Michela followed him.  And the rest was all love and history.  When he was ready to propose, he contacted us at Engaged on Maui and asked for our help to get the perfect proposal for his love! We were thrilled to help him set up this South Maui surprise proposal.  Michela was over the moon with how he asked!

THE PLAN:

Francesco wanted to have a beautiful beach proposal with a great sunset.  And because he often cooked for Michela on their first dates when they were falling in love, he wanted to make sure they had a fancy dinner as part of their night.  Of course, he wanted incredible photos of their proposal.  Our associate photographer Tenessa nailed it and created beautiful images for them.

THE PROPOSAL:

When they were walking down the beach, Michela happened upon a message in a bottle sitting on a beautiful shell.  First, she was super excited to find the bottle–I mean, who wouldn’t be!  But then it got even better!  When she opened the note inside, she started realizing what was happening!  At that moment, Francesco knelt down on one knee and asked her to marry him!  There were happy tears and a great big YES from Michela,

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We started their engagement session on the same beach they got engaged on.  These two have obvious chemistry together!  What made this proposal extra unique was that after their beach engagement photo session, they had one last “location” our photographer brought them to. Our associate Tenessa walked them to Four Seasons, and took them to the final location–a gorgeous dinner set up overlooking the ocean.  Francesco had booked the Ultimate Dinner at the Four Seasons as a final surprise for Michela.  It was a great ending to a wonderful proposal.
