Bryce and Brianna’s love story found its perfect next chapter on the golden sands of Maui. Visiting the island for a dreamy getaway, Bryce knew he wanted to make their trip unforgettable by asking Brianna to spend forever with him. With the sound of gentle waves and the warm glow of a Maui sunset setting the stage, he planned a simple yet heartfelt beach proposal that was nothing short of magical. It was a moment filled with love, anticipation, and the beauty of Hawaii, creating memories they’ll treasure forever.

THE PLAN:

We had a lot of wiggle room when it came to this proposal. Bryce and Brianna had no big plans, so a romantic sunset proposal was easy. It was easy to pick from one of our favorite spots and set a meeting time just before the sun started to set.

THE PROPOSAL:

For the proposal, Bryce took Brianna to the designated beach while I hid behind some foliage. She was absolutely shocked that he got down on one knee and pulled out a wooden box with a ring. Brianna’s reaction was pure joy—a mix of surprise, happy tears, and laughter that made the moment feel even more special. After she said yes, it was time to capture their excitement in a series of candid and heartfelt photos. The Maui sunset creating the perfect romantic backdrop for their first moments as an engaged couple.

Jordan and Megan had an incredible North Shore proposal. Because Jordan knew he wanted his proposal to Megan to be unique he knew he had to pop the question in Maui. Since he and his family had been visiting Maui for years, it held a special place in his heart. Megan had never been to Maui, and now she will always remember her first visit.

THE PLAN:

Jordan’s mom, June, played a big part in pulling off this North Shore Proposal. She wanted to be sure everything was extra special for the couple. The couple had dinner plans at Mama’s Fish House, but before dinner, Jordan wanted to show Megan his favorite beach.

THE PROPOSAL:

The beach was pristine that evening, and the sky was filled with kite surfers. Megan was in awe of the beauty that surrounded her. The colors in the sky and the beautiful light were genuinely amazing. So Megan took out her cell phone and began to record some video. She was so enthralled with the beauty surrounding her she almost missed Jordan getting down on one knee!!!  When Megan finally realized what was happening she was overcome with joy! After she said yes, the couple walked on the beach to take in the beauty together. Then they were off to celebrate with Jordan’s family over dinner.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

North Shore beach is quickly becoming one of our favorite engagement destinations in Maui because of all the beauty it offers. The variety of scenery is just a few of the amazing things about this unforgettable location.

This was our first picnic proposal at the Maui Dragonfruit Farm that we have now partnered with!  We are really excited to now offer this new, private venue along side our Haiku Mill and the Four Seasons for dudes who want privacy during their proposal.  The Maui Dragonfruit Farm is located in Launiupoko in West Maui.

THE PLAN:

Shalin wanted something extra special so we gathered a few more Maui peeps to get the perfect proposal all set.  We partnered with Lucy Soulshine Creations.    She puts together these fantastic, custom-made picnics.  Shalin decided since they were going to dinner later, they wanted something lighter.  So, Lucy put together a mixture of local fruits and some sparkling water and some cheeses.  Shalin also wanted a lot of flowers, so we worked with Floralette to create a gorgeous floral arch and hanging flowers.

THE PROPOSAL:

Shalin got Shradha to the farm saying that they were going to have a tour that had a picnic as part of the tour.  Of course, unbeknownst to Shradha he was going to propose.  They sat down and enjoyed some of the yummy treats.  And when the timing was right, Shalin popped the question!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Shalin had been going back and forth with whether or not to include the TV show Friends into the proposal (because they both love the show) Lucy brought a little sign out that said “I’ll be there for you” as an added bonus.  It was a fun touch to incorporate into their photo shoot.  They enjoyed their picnic.  Did some awesome photos at the Dragonfruit farm and went down to a gorgeous beach just two minutes down the road.  They were able to catch a pretty epic sunset that night.

When I saw the light this night, I knew it would have to get on the blog.  This breathtaking South Maui sunset proposal is exactly what people are looking for when they say they want a beach proposal at sunset.

THE PLAN:

Andrew and Adrienne met in a CPR class he was teaching for life guards.  During the four day class, he paid extra special attention to Adrienne.  When they started dating, they spent all their time at the beach because they were both lifeguards.  Because these two have so many special memories spent on a beach together watching sunsets, Andrew knew he had to propose on a beach.  At sunset, of course!

THE PROPOSAL:

As they walked down the beach at sunset, Andrew casually pointed out the islands they could see.  Finally, he got to just the right spot and positioned Adrienne perfectly for the proposal! But before he dropped down to one knee, he took her flip flops she was carrying and threw them off to the side.  He dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him.  She was so surprised and there were lots of beautiful tears!  Then he introduced us…..the photographers hiding in the bushes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We had a lovely engagement session on the beach and the sunset was out of this world!  The light was so amazing that evening and the bright blue water just popped!  Our photo session and their proposal was even published on the proposal website How He Asked so check it out!

Is a Haleakala Proposal Right for You?

Haleakala National Park encompasses over 30,000 acres of land, ranging from the coastal area of Kipahulu filled with lush jungle and waterfalls soaring up through 6 of the world’s 14 climate zones to the summit of Maui’s dormant volcano.

The name Haleakala means “house of the sun.” Legend has it that the demigod Maui, who the island is named after, went out to capture the sun after his mother Hina complained that the days were too short for her to dry out her kapa (bark cloth). Maui went to the peak of the mountain and waited to the sun to rise from the crater. The legend begins to differ a little here, but basically Maui snared the sun with his lasso and only let it go after it agreed to travel slower for half the year. This agreement allowed Hawaii to have its seasons of winter and summer. Hawaiians enjoyed a longer growing season and Hina was able to dry out her kapa.

Haleakala Crater is a giant shield volcano that takes up three-quarters of Maui’s 727 square miles (1,170 km) and rises up to 10,023 feet (3,005 m) above sea level. The summit’s high elevation, lack of environmental pollution, and ever-changing weather patterns make it an ideal place to view the sky. In fact, astronomers come from all over the world to observe and research.

Sunrises and sunsets at Haleakala Crater can be absolutely breathtaking! The view, along with the feeling of being on top of the world, makes Haleakala an epic proposal location on Maui. However, there are a few things you should be aware of to determine if this is the best place for you and your sweetie!

There will be other people around

Haleakala is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Maui. If you are interested in proposing at the Haleakala summit at sunrise, you will have an audience. If you are open to somewhere other than the summit, there are certain spots on the crater that tend to be less busy. However, we do need to respect park rules and stay within boundaries at all times.

We do our very best to capture you at angles where other people are not in the background, but in reality, people are there. Sometimes we have to crop the photo so you won’t see everyone else around. Other times, we work photoshop magic.

Requirements for Haleakala sunrise

Due to the popularity of sunrise viewing at the summit and limited parking, Haleakala National Park reservations are required for every vehicle entering the park from 3:00 am to 7:00 am. Reservations open two months in advance and often sell out very quickly. Another batch of tickets is opened up two days before the scheduled date. Tickets are $1.50 per vehicle and must be purchased online ahead of time. They are not available up at the park entrance. If you cannot reserve a ticket and/or we cannot reserve a ticket for our photographer, we have to make plans for after sunrise.

We also have to file a permit for being able to take professional photos at Haleakala National Park. The permit process does take a while, so we need at least one month notice to make sure the permit can be filed in time.

Long drive

If you are staying in a resort area, it will likely take you at least two hours to drive from your hotel to Haleakala Summit. To ensure you get a good spot and are there on time, we will have you arrive an hour before sunrise. The good news is colors before daybreak are amazing. The bad news is you will have to be ready to leave your hotel by 2:30-3:30 in the morning, depending on the time of year and exactly where you’re driving from.

Poor cell phone service

We send you a detailed itinerary of the proposal plan. As long as you follow this plan, everything should go swimmingly. We know that stuff happens though, which can throw the plan off. Normally, you let us know and we try to make it work. However, cell phone service at Haleakala is spotty, so it might be hard to get in contact should we need to make any changes to the set plan.

Bundle up

Although we are on a tropical island, it is very cold at the summit. The temperature drops 3 degrees for every 1000 feet of elevation, so it’s about 30°F (or 17°C) colder than at sea level. Temperatures are often in the 40s F, but can dip below freezing.

We want you to be comfortable and safe, so you’ll need to wear layers, long pants, and covered shoes.

Haleakala weather is unpredictable

Weather moves really fast up at the crater and can be completely different from the rest of the island. The weather conditions frequently change throughout the day. It can be raining and covered in clouds and completely clear up to be gorgeous an hour later. If you’re doing a sunset proposal at Haleakala, watching these weather changes take place is nerve-wracking. If the weather cooperates, the colors are spectacular. Since we know Mother Nature likes to change her mind a lot at the crater, it’s a bit of a gamble.

It was cloudy during this proposal, but it cleared up right after.

In summary, if you want your proposal to be:

– in a more private atmosphere
– planned last minute
– close to your hotel or a romantic restaurant
– a time where your love will be dressed up
– in a location that will likely be sunny

Then Haleakala may not be the right Maui proposal location for you. But we have lots of other options we can discuss!

This couple has been together since high school.  I have always had a soft spot for high school sweethearts (probably because I knew my husband was “the one” since we were in high school!)  When Richard contacted me, he knew he wanted to propose on Haleakala. He initially thought he wanted to propose in the morning, but we convinced him to go with a gorgeous Haleakala sunset proposal instead.  And boy, was it worth changing the time from sunrise to sunset!

THE PLAN:

Richard wanted a more private, intimate proposal.  Haleakala in the morning is so busy, and we can’t always trust the weather.  But Haleakala at sunset is much more predictable in terms of weather, and the views you can get from the summit at sunset are out of this world!  It’s also far less busy up there in the evenings, so the proposal can be more intimate. We really prefer to shoot a sunset proposal there over sunrise.  And you’ll see why when you look at the photos!

THE PROPOSAL:

We had some really crummy weather the week before, so we were crossing our fingers that the day of their proposal the weather would clear up.  We were so lucky it did, because the proposal was absolutely beautiful. When Richard walked Agnes to the spot he was supposed to propose, he dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him!  Way above the clouds, she said “Yes” with tears in her eyes.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

The Engagement Session was just perfect.  We worked with Caleb from Areca Film Company to create a short proposal video.  We were so happy to get a lot of variation in shots up there and an unbelievable, colorful sunset up above the clouds.

This colorful private beach proposal in South Maui was just what we needed after this long stretch of dreary days. We’re just so happy to see the bright Maui colors come back after the long winter we had. Our couple, Michael and Kimberly had great chemistry and a great sense of humor.   Tenessa, our associate photographer,  took gorgeous photos of these two, we’re excited to be sharing them with you!

THE PLAN:

When Michael contacted us, he shared that he really wanted a beach or a cliff proposal.  After showing him a couple options, he chose this lovely South Maui beach for their sunset proposal.  

THE PROPOSAL:

As Michael led Kimberly to the predetermined pocket of sand by the lava rocks, the waves were crashing on the rocks.  He knelt down as soon as he got to the spot, and Kimberly was shocked! He asked. She said “Yes!” And the waves crashed into the rocks giving them the most glorious, splashy  proposal shots!  

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Michael opted for the Perfect Proposal Package, and this beach was a beautiful place to propose and start their engagement shots.  I just love how Kimberly’s long, flowered dress blew in the wind as they walked the shore line. One of our favorite shots of the night is when they were tucked away, snuggling in together next to these huge lava rocks and we got the golden light for these two.  It was magnificent.

Knowing that his lady, Christina, would prefer a gorgeous beach proposal at sunset, Jonathan contacted us to start setting that up for him.  At Engaged on Maui, we are always up for a new proposal ideas.  And this unique beach proposal using a drone did not disappoint!

THE PLAN:

So Jonathan had this really cool idea that he wanted to fly a drone for this proposal.  The drone was provided by him. The plan was the drone was going to lift off in the air, and he was going to tell her to keep her eye on the drone.  And while she was looking at the drone to make sure it wasn’t about to crash into the ocean, he would get down on one knee and ask her the big question!

THE PROPOSAL:

This proposal went exactly according to plan!  The drone went up, he enjoyed flying it for a few minutes and then as Christina acted as “spotter”, Jonathan took a knee.  When she turned around to see him ready to propose, she just couldn’t believe it! Of course she said “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:  

They got this really cool drone footage that was provided by him.  You can check out that sweet drone video here. It was a cool spin on a beach proposal in that he got some extra footage himself and we were there to capture the moment. After the proposal we had a great 30-minute photo session on the beach.  These two lovebirds ran around on the beach for some fun shots. And then we got some romantic shots of the new fiances to round out the session.

Rachel reached out to me and she wanted to do an off the beaten path proposal for her sweetie, Victoria.  They were coming all the way from New Zealand.  She wanted something that looked like Hawaii, but didn’t want the postcard-look Hawaii.  So after going back and forth over a couple different options, we chose this remote secret cliffside proposal in Northwest Maui.

THE PLAN:

Rachel said both she and Victoria are rather adventurous, so it was no problem to get Victoria down to the cliff.  It’s a bit of a hike to get down there.  She also sent me a box in the mail to set up on a different location out by the cliff. The box had a heart lock on it, and Rachel would give Victoria the key after the proposal.

THE PROPOSAL:

The ladies hiked down to the spot where we planned, and I started snapping away.  As soon as they got down there, Rachel dropped to her knee and popped the question!  Victoria was so surprised!  She of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After the proposal was done, we were able to go to where we placed the box and get some cool shots of them opening the box.  Then we went to the jungle in that same area to add some greenery to their session.  And finally, we ended up on one of our favorite beaches in Northwest Maui.  This proposal was actually featured in Huffington Post (the ladies are #13…and as long as you’re there check out #6, too!)!

Rachel and Victoria: Congratulations on your incredible secret cliffside proposal!  You two are so lovely together.  And I love your adventurous spirits that let us take you to Northwest Maui to get these incredible shots!  Cheers to happily ever after!

Joe did something we wish more couples would do.  He decided to go in a little more forward approach to his proposal.  Instead of doing a more paparazzi/ninja/hide-in-the bushes style proposal, he wanted to go another route.  He wanted to pretend that he and his sweetie Christine had been gifted a fun portrait session from one of the hotel photographers where they were staying.  So, we created this planned photo shoot turned surprise proposal for them. This style worked out great because we could plan 100% exactly how it would go down.  Typically, we have a really great plan set in place, but there are always a lot of variables and this is a way to control all of them!

THE PLAN:

We started the photo session–the part that Christine was privy to–at a beach down in South Maui.  After spending about 15 or 20 minutes there we moved down to our proposal spot.  What was really cool about this proposal was that Joe had conspired with all of their friends to show up at the beach and surprise Christine after the proposal.

THE PROPOSAL:

The friends actually got to the beach early, and they set out a circle of rose petals on the sand.  When Chantelle, Joe and Christine arrived at the beach, Chantelle said, “Hey, let’s get some photos with these rose petals.  I’ve never seen this before.” Kind of playing it off.  Chantelle had Christine turn around and face the palm trees for a “special shot”.  And in that moment, Joe dropped down to one knee to pop the question when Christine turned back around.  She of course was super surprised and said, “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Christine was even more surprised when she saw her friends come barreling out of a tent that was hiding in the woods! When we had initially discussed the plan, they were just going to be hiding in the woods.  So we thought it was really fun that they were recording the whole thing and hiding in the tent that was pushed back into the woods.  After all the wonderful hugs, kisses, and tears, we got back to the engagement session.  First, we got some shots of them on some cool lava rocks and then playing by the ocean.  And we finished their engagement session with a spectacular sunset.
