Lyndon and Jeanne’s love story has always been filled with love and laughter. Their trip to Maui was already a dream, but Lyndon had something even more magical planned… a storyteller cliffside proposal. As they took in the island’s breathtaking beauty, he dropped to one knee and asked Jeanne to be his forever. With happy tears, a resounding “yes,” and the ocean waves cheering them on, their love story reached a beautiful new chapter in paradise.

THE PLAN:

Lyndon reached out a few months before their trip with a plan in mind. We took his proposal package and added a few things to really up the romance. After reviewing his options and picking out a date we had the perfect cliffside proposal plan in place.

THE PROPOSAL:

For the proposal, Lyndon and Jeanne hiked up to a cliffside lookout to enjoy the views, but Lyndon had a surprise. An acoustic guitarist strummed a soft melody and sang while a graceful hula dancer told a love story through movement. With the waves crashing, the wind in the air, and the romantic music serenading them, Lyndon got down on his knee. The breathtaking view behind them, the music playing, and the sun setting made this proposal seem like it was made for a movie set.

Sometimes, backup plans turn out to be for the best. That certainly was the case for this dreamy Maui cliff proposal.

THE PLAN:

Andrew originally got in touch with us for a Haleakala sunrise proposal. He and Katarina had already reserved one ticket to watch the sunrise at the summit of Haleakala, so he thought it would fit in perfectly with their plans to propose there.

The only problem – when we went to make a reservation for our photographer, the sunrise tickets were all sold out! Each vehicle needs a reservation to go up to watch the sunrise at the summit of Haleakala. Since they only had one ticket, there were a few options.

1. Wait until two days before the date to see if we could secure a second ticket for our photographer.

2. Our photographer would be able to get into the national park without a reservation after 7am. Andrew and Katarina would watch the sunrise together and stick around Haleakala until after 7am for the proposal.

3. Pick a different plan.

Andrew discreetly floated the idea of sticking around after sunrise but it wasn’t in the cards, so option #2 was out.

We decided to combine options #1 and #4. We waited to see if we could get another ticket but figured out a backup plan in the meantime. That way, if we weren’t able to secure a Haleakala sunrise reservation for the day they were going, we would already know the new plan and wouldn’t need to scramble to come up with something else so close to the date.

Andrew was going to be on a flight when the second batch of Haleakala sunrise reservation tickets were released and recruited some loved ones to help out. This was our only chance to get a ticket so we could make a Haleakala sunrise proposal happen. We were logged in and ready to reserve a ticket on our end. His team was in place as well. Even with 10 of us trying, we weren’t able to get a second reservation. We clicked to reserve a ticket as soon as they were available, but the system was processing for a couple minutes, saying it was trying to secure the reservation (which really gave us hope), and then finally said tickets were all sold out.

Andrew even called the recreation.gov office, which is where you buy the tickets from, to explain the situation and see if any exceptions could be made. They said the only way for our photographer to get in to the park for sunrise without her own reservation would be to ride with someone who did have a reservation since the tickets are per vehicle, not per person.

We had previously discussed the idea of our photographer pretending that her car broke down and for Andrew and Katarina to pick her up. But this seemed too suspicious and also potentially unsafe for our photographer. What if someone else stopped to help her first? What if Katarina (understandably) didn’t want to pick up a stranger on the side of the road in the dark? There were too many variables to go wrong, so this wasn’t really an option.

With the hopes of a Haleakala sunrise proposal dashed, we moved on to the plan for the cliff proposal. This worked because Andrew and Katarina already had dinner reservations at a nearby restaurant. They could conveniently stop at the cliff to take in the view on their way to dinner.

THE PROPOSAL:

With this location, the weather and lighting can really affect the colors of the cliff and sky in photos. It was beautifully sunny when Andrew brought Katarina to the cliff. The light sparkled off the ocean in the background.

Katarina looked gorgeous in her white dress, all ready for a nice dinner. She would not have been able to be dressed this way for a proposal on Haleakala. Up there, it’s more appropriate to be all bundled up for comfort and warmth, especially for sunrise.

She was so thrilled when Andrew asked her to marry him! Of course it was a huge yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After all that planning (we basically planned two proposals), Andrew was relieved.

Our photographer Tenessa took them all around the area. They explored more of the cliff, found some greenery, and ended with sunset on the beach. Their gallery had a little bit of everything.

As soon as we saw the sneak peeks, we knew everything had worked out just as it was meant to be. Andrew knew Katarina would love hearing the backstory and all the effort that went into planning.

It’s truly a great reminder to those planning their proposal: even if your first choice doesn’t work out, your sweetie doesn’t know that. As long as you’ve put thought behind it being a plan they would like (even if it’s a Plan B or a Plan C to you), it’s going to be beautiful to them… and it will make for an even better story.

Best Maui Proposal Photographs of 2019

Our most popular location was definitely our beaches. And who can blame the folks proposing? Maui boasts some of the best beaches in the world so it only makes sense that it would be the most popular! But we also did a ton with Air Maui! Pairing an experience with your proposal is the best way to do it, in our opinion!

Our most popular private venue was the Haiku Mill. We love the grounds and staff there! We can’t wait to blog more about some of our favorite Haiku Mill proposals in 2020!

Sunset Cliff Proposal on Maui’s North Shore

Michael was originally thinking of a Haleakala sunrise proposal. However, we need at least one month to reserve Haleakala at sunrise and we only had about a week to plan. Michael and Erin are outdoorsy and love to hike. Michael said few spots would be off limits. We jumped at the opportunity to suggest this north shore cliff location, which fit perfectly into their existing vacation plans.

THE PLAN:

On the day of the proposal, Michael and Erin planned to drive the Road to Hana. Michael was able to get reservations at Mama’s Fish House to enjoy on the way back. Their reservation was for afternoon, between lunch and dinner, before sunset. The timing worked out so that they could have a leisurely meal and then Michael could suggest going to the proposal spot to watch the sunset.

THE PROPOSAL:

Michael led Erin to where they could look out at the Pacific Ocean. Since there was nowhere for our photographer Tenessa to hide, she followed them discreetly from behind and was poised and ready to capture the big moment. Erin looked surprised at first and then couldn’t stop beaming from ear to ear!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

The rocky terrain made a beautiful contrast to the blue water and the clouds added drama to the sky. The off-the-beaten path location was very fitting for an outdoorsy couple. Michael and Erin were so sweet! They couldn’t keep their eyes off each other and loved holding each other close.

The Best Places To Propose In Maui

Maui exudes romance! With over 30 miles of beaches and a huge variety of settings to drop to one knee, Maui has you covered. We know that choosing the best location could depend on your personalities, her subtle hinting, your sense of adventure, or sentimental incorporations. That being said, we wanted to gather a list of our favorite proposal locations to help you out! Without further ado. here are some of our all-time favorite best places to propose in Maui:

SOUTH SHORE BEACHES

Conveniently located near many of the best restaurants on the island and offering some of the most romantic sunset views, there are dozens of white sand beaches to choose from in Kihei, Wailea and Makena. Black lava rocks are present at many of these ideal proposal locations. These rocks in particular offer a gorgeous contrast to the blue water and colorful sunsets.

THE TOP OF A VOLCANO

What’s more romantic than a proposal in the clouds? Maui is home to the largest dormant volcano. Haleakala (meaning ‘house of the sun’) features otherworldly beauty and is consistently rated one of the best places to view sunrise or sunset. The drive itself is picturesque but you’ll need warm clothing for this location.

JUNGLE

Hanging vines, lush foliage, and fragrant ginger flowers set a tropical vibe for that once in a lifetime question. Follow up with an engagement photography session at the shoreline. Talk about two incredible settings in one magical West Maui location!

HAIKU MILL

There is a reason this is one of the most coveted wedding venues in the state. The Haiku Mill is over 150 years old, with a breathtaking mix of French-inspired décor, vine-draped ruins, and spectacular flora. A stroll beneath the Mill’s archway is like a trip back in time.

SECLUDED PENINSULA

Get a new perspective on Maui and sweep her off her feet, literally! A helicopter tour is the best way to explore otherwise inaccessible valleys and waterfalls. It is also the best way to reach secluded locations. This way, you can be sure to pop the question without an audience.

CLIFFSIDE

Imagine the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, the Maui sun setting on the horizon. Just the two of you, perched precariously in the most secluded island chain in the world. The imagery of a cliffside location is one of our very favorites and can easily be combined with a beach proposal or photo session.

FOREST

Not just any forest, take her to a stand of Eucalyptus with bicoastal island views. Nothing on Maui is ordinary! A forest offers privacy and a sense of adventure to start your lifetime together.

Rachel reached out to me and she wanted to do an off the beaten path proposal for her sweetie, Victoria.  They were coming all the way from New Zealand.  She wanted something that looked like Hawaii, but didn’t want the postcard-look Hawaii.  So after going back and forth over a couple different options, we chose this remote secret cliffside proposal in Northwest Maui.

THE PLAN:

Rachel said both she and Victoria are rather adventurous, so it was no problem to get Victoria down to the cliff.  It’s a bit of a hike to get down there.  She also sent me a box in the mail to set up on a different location out by the cliff. The box had a heart lock on it, and Rachel would give Victoria the key after the proposal.

THE PROPOSAL:

The ladies hiked down to the spot where we planned, and I started snapping away.  As soon as they got down there, Rachel dropped to her knee and popped the question!  Victoria was so surprised!  She of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After the proposal was done, we were able to go to where we placed the box and get some cool shots of them opening the box.  Then we went to the jungle in that same area to add some greenery to their session.  And finally, we ended up on one of our favorite beaches in Northwest Maui.  This proposal was actually featured in Huffington Post (the ladies are #13…and as long as you’re there check out #6, too!)!

Incredible Cliffside Sunset Proposal on Maui

I had actually been talking to Adin since June of 2017.  He really wanted to make sure he had plenty of time to think about and plan out every detail of his proposal to his long time girlfriend Mika.  They met in flight school, they’re both pilots.  Right after he proposed a Hawaiian Airlines plane flew over them as if we had planned it!  This incredible cliffside sunset proposal on Maui couldn’t have been more beautiful!

THE PLAN:

He wanted to propose in a spot that was a little more unique than a beach–which I always love!  I had scouted this area because a friend had told me about this gem.  My friend told me that there was this really cool spot that fishermen like to use and it has AMAZING views of Lana’i and Kaho’olawe and the whale activity we get this time of year.  I showed it to Adin and he thought it would be the perfect spot.  

THE PROPOSAL:

We timed it right with sunset–which was beyond gorgeous that evening.  She was totally blown away.  Right before he dropped down on one knee he said to her, “In ten years we are going to come back to this spot and we’re going to tell this story to our children.”  Queue the tears.  There are some shots of him checking out the ring.  Turns out the the two stones to the side of the center diamond were smuggled out of Poland in World War II by his family.  So that’s pretty amazing.  There was so much sentiment and meaning behind this ring.  He also had the ring customized, engraved with a M for Mika and on the other side engraved with an A for Adin.  

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We had lots of whales during this session.  It was so cool to do something different for this engagement because Maui has so much more to offer than just its pristine white beaches.

These Australians came to Maui looking for adventure.  Cameron knew that he wanted somewhere spectacular to pop the question to Evie.  We went back and forth several times trying to find the exact right location for them.  Cameron felt like he wanted to ask her to marry him in this gorgeous, picturesque Northwest Maui cliff proposal.

THE PLAN:

We planned for Cameron to lead Evie to this incredible cliff side in Northwest Maui on a pre-sunset adventure.  She was up for any beautiful spot the island had to offer, so it was easy to get here there.  Once they got there, Cameron was going to lead her to a spot on the rocks and he’d ask her there!

THE PROPOSAL:

They got to the site about a half hour before sunset and our associate photographer, Chantelle, spotted them right away.  They walked hand in hand towards the edge of the cliff, and Cameron slowed down just before they got to the spot.  When he was ready, he dropped to one knee and asked Evie to marry him.  She was so surprised and of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

One super romantic gesture from Cameron (you know, besides the incredibly romantic proposal) was that he brought Evie a change of clothes for their photo shoot after he proposed.  I thought this was so sweet and thoughtful.  While I love my husband, I know he wouldn’t have thought of that!  We had an incredible sunset that evening on the rocks.  We had the beach mainly to ourselves and the light was pretty incredible.

Matt and Jackie were on island from California and were ready for anything in their Northwest Maui rain or shine proposal.  Matt wanted to propose to Jackie in a place where we hadn’t had a proposal before.  We knew exactly the location for them which was over in Northwest Maui on a secluded cliff.  We were a little worried about the rain that day.  Northwest Maui tends to be a little rainier than other locations on island.  And….we had some rain squalls coming through.  Rain can either be a photographers nightmare or a dream come true.  Thankfully, Matt was a dream client in his attitude about the weather!

THE PLAN:

We were in contact with Matt throughout the day, and we left the final decision for the day’s events up to him.  He was enthusiastic in his response that even if it rained, it would just add to their proposal story.  Amazing, right?  We loved his attitude about that!  Luckily, the rain ended up passing, and we even had a rainbow in the distance right before Matt and Jackie showed up.

THE PROPOSAL:

Once Matt and Jackie arrived, the proposal happened quickly!  As soon as they got there, Matt led her over to the spot he would propose.  Chantelle, one of our associate photographers, was in place, ready for action. Matt dropped to one knee, and of course Jackie said yes! Jackie was so happy and just kept wrapping Matt up in hugs!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Once Jackie spotted our photographer, Chantelle started shooting the engagement session.  We got an incredible sunset that night!  We loved setting up the proposal in this spot because of how secluded it is.  The blue water, the rocks, and the beach location right below made for a gorgeous setting for their engagement photos!

It was one of those days where we had a huge backup on the Pali (the road that goes to Lahaina) and the sky threatened to open up and pour at any moment, but by-golly this proposal worked out amazingly well! This gorgeous Kapalua Bay proposal at Merriman’s had everything a proposal should have: lava rock, sand, personalization, and a ton of emotion!

THE PLAN:

Nate had planned a romantic dinner at one of my favorite places in West Maui: Merriman’s in Kapalua. After dinner, the plan was to lead Kim down to the rocks, where she would discover a gorgeous book Nate had made for her. I added in some orchid flowers just to spice it up a bit.

THE PROPOSAL:

Dinner ran a touch behind – but as I always say – better late than early when it comes to proposals! It began to sprinkle and I crossed my fingers. Please, please, please, don’t rain! Luckily, it only rained for two minutes or so – and then Nate and Kim appeared from the bushes. He led her over to the spot with the book. Her laughter was contagious even from a distance! When she got to the last page, Nate got down on one knee. I’m pretty sure she said yes like three times!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

For the engagement session, we opted to stay close to Merriman’s. We did some photos on the rocks and then headed down to Kapalua Bay to finish out our session. The evening was dark to begin with so we didn’t think we would get much of a sunset. Turns out that the sunset we got was AMAZING! I haven’t seen pinks like that in a really, really long time!
