When we heard about Cheryl’s background, we knew she was going to be crazy about Dante’s proposal!  Cheryl is an awesome Meteorologist in Chicago.  (She has quite an Instagram following, so she’s worth checking out HERE.  And HERE is her ABC 7 Eyewitness News Bio to check out!) Dante really wanted to have an above the clouds proposal in Maui because she’s a meteorologist and you know how they get about clouds and the sky and weather and all that good stuff.  That’s kind of her jam. So, to the top of Haleakala we went!

We could sit here and tell you all about how it happened…but who better to tell the story than Dante himself!

“Slow down! You’re going to drive off the road!”

Cheryl was a ball of anxiety, sitting in the passenger seat; no, clinging to the armrest in the passenger seat of the white Jeep Wrangler she and her boyfriend, Dante, had rented for their stay in Maui.

They were on their way to the peak of Mount Haleakala, a dormant volcano on the east side of the island. Ascending it was no easy task. Even by four-wheel drive, and perfect weather conditions. Plus, Dante had something special planned set to coincide with the remarkable sunsets on the Mount that they couldn’t be late for. A plan a year in the works to propose to the love of his life, Cheryl.

Let’s back up a bit…

10 months earlier, in October, Cheryl and Dante set their sites on visiting Hawaii in December. Neither had been, but both knew very well of its enchanting landscapes. Dante decided this would be the place, and time, to pop the question.

He actually decided to propose about 2 years earlier, when Cheryl had taken him on a magical Ferris Wheel ride followed by a not so magical ride on the swings at Navy Pier in Chicago. Where the two live.

But now he had a set date and place he could start planning for. Nothing would get in his way!

He began seeking out places and people to make the occasion special.

Through some amazing friends in the event planning business he was referred to Engaged on Maui- a one stop shop for planning and capturing the special moment.

He spoke directly with Fawn and coordinated a breathtaking proposal for Haleakala National Park summit during sunset on the third night of their trip.

The heat was on and the clock was officially counting down. All they needed to do was get to Hawaii in December.

About ten days before their trip Cheryl came to Dante with some unsettling news.

“It looks like Hawaii is in the path of a tropical storm.”

She would know – she’s a meteorologist!

Cheryl, being one of the country’s top meteorologist’s tended to know these kinds of things.

“You have got to be kidding me.” (or something like that) Dante replied. Praying deep down the weather would cooperate.

It would not however, and the couple was forced to audible their plans the week of the Hawaii trip due to the torrent storm and instead go to Costa Rica.

Dante had no knowledge of Costa Rica, or contacts, so he went back and forth on popping the question there. Ultimately, he decided against it, and waited until the couple could reschedule for Hawaii.

One of the first memories Dante had of discussing marriage with Cheryl was her emphasizing how important the proposal was to her. She is very low maintenance and easy-going, but she made it clear her proposal needed to be special. Which was music to Dante’s ears, as he loves to go over the top on just about everything.

So just winging it in Costa Rica was out of the question.

Dante urged Cheryl to rebook Hawaii asap. They settled on early July of that year, 2018.

For the next six months Dante had to continue to hide the engagement ring from Cheryl and try to not over-think his plan.

Fawn was amazing at rescheduling and coordinating everything with Dante. The two of them figured out that Sunday night, July 8^th, would be ideal for the proposal. Fewer people on the mountain, and Dante was able to score a hard to get reservation at Mama’s Fish House so they could celebrate there afterwards.

Fawn ran a couple of her best photographers and videographers by Dante for approval. After seeing their past work he quickly agreed. Together, they planned out a perfectly timed sunset arrival for Dante and Cheryl at the parking lot just before the summit, which would provide the best chance at privacy. Engaged on Maui’s photographer and videographer would be setup there already, disguised as tourists taking in the sights off to the backside of the landing.

The plan was foolproof!

Or so they thought.

After arriving on Maui, taking in the local customs, scenery, and wildlife for a few days, Sunday was approaching. Dante had reached out to Cheryl’s oldest brother, Kevin, for approval and was given the green light. At the time, he thought he was more nervous about asking him than he would be asking Cheryl. (He was wrong).

On Saturday Dante and Fawn covertly spoke on the phone without Cheryl knowing and went over the final plan for the 100^th, and hopefully last time. They both checked the weather that night and things looked to be shaping up to be another beautiful day.

Sunday morning arrived and the weather was gorgeous as it had been all week.

The couple started the day with a nice walk along the shoreline before breakfast with plans to hit the beach for a few hours before trekking up to “explore” Mount Haleakala around sunset. Dante recalls not being able to believe the day had finally come as they lay on the beach late morning through lunch. Around lunchtime Dante checked his phone and nearly had a heart attack.

Weather can sometimes be finicky on Haleakala

There was a text from Fawn telling him to check his weather apps and the National Park’s website because it looked like a bad storm was moving in on the volcano summit.

Cheryl was just as excited as Dante to make the trek up to the summit, not knowing what was in store for her. But she became perturbed when Dante began asking her for weather updates relating to the mountaintop every 10 or 15 minutes.

“Why do you keep asking about the weather up there?”

“Just look at the clouds all moving in over there, you can tell without a radar it’s going to be bad up there.”

“We don’t have to go tonight, let’s just go later in the week.”

Dante thought to himself this couldn’t be happening again. The weather!

For the next 5 hours Dante and Fawn snuck phone calls, texts, and group emails with the photographer and videographer trying to decide whether to chance it and stick to that evening, or move it once again.

We had to reschedule.

The only night the photographer and videographer were available was the following night, Monday. They decided to roll the dice and plan for the next day as Dante sweated bullets through what was supposed to be the happiest celebratory dinner the couple ever had at Mama’s Fish House.

That night while laying in bed Dante refreshed the webcam stationed on Mount Haleakala hoping for a sign of good weather the next day. Cheryl continued to question why he was so concerned with the weather all of a sudden.

Monday came and with it brought beautiful weather once again. But Dante was weary.

He remained nervous the entire day.

Which may have explained his led-foot in the Jeep racing up the winding two lane “highway” to Haleakala’s peak.

The turbulent car ride did not please Cheryl. But they couldn’t be late and miss the sunset.

Upon finally arriving (safely) at the lookout spot Dante was relieved to see that Cheryl and he were the only people there. Aside from two “tourists” with professional photo equipment off by themselves taking in the majestic backdrop.

Breathtaking doesn’t do justice to the view from above the clouds with the sun making it’s slow departure, dipping behind them, casting a kaleidoscope of pinks, oranges, and pastels as far as the eye could see. This was definitely the right spot to ask the girl of his dreams, who had been obsessed with weather since she was a little girl, to spend the rest of her life with him.

As the couple looked out over the chain of islands dotting the Pacific ocean, and Dante ran through his gameplan trying to muster up the courage he suddenly needed, they heard rocks crunch to their left.

As they looked over towards the parking lot, a Church van was pulling in. It parked, and out exited about 12 tourists from Japan. Not only were they not alone anymore, but they all had high-end cameras around their necks. Which to Dante meant having to figure out a way to find a private spot now, and quick, or to photoshop them out of the pictures and video after.

Luck shined on him though and the tour group had a feeling a proposal was about to take place. Apparently, it was evident to everybody on the mountain that evening except for Cheryl, as the tour group stayed to the back and as Dante descended to one knee the photographer and videographer scrambled into place while recording.

Cheryl had no idea what was happening and in a confused state, just said “no” as Dante began to talk. Dante was caught off guard so stopped, to which Cheryl then told him “no go on.”

He began again, mind blacked out with emotion.

She said yes!

She said yes to spending the rest of her life with him and making him the happiest man in the world.

Cheryl claimed she was totally, absolutely surprised, but by the looks of Dante’s face in the pictures it looks like he was more so.

And the pictures!

The pictures of the two, set against the backdrop of the Maui sunset from up above the clouds look surreal. A work of CGI.

In the end, the weather cooperated, the meteorologist got her special proposal, the luckiest guy in the world got the girl of his dreams and Engaged on Maui captured it all perfectly on video and in photos. I couldn’t be happier!

The Best Places To Propose In Maui

Maui exudes romance! With over 30 miles of beaches and a huge variety of settings to drop to one knee, Maui has you covered. We know that choosing the best location could depend on your personalities, her subtle hinting, your sense of adventure, or sentimental incorporations. That being said, we wanted to gather a list of our favorite proposal locations to help you out! Without further ado. here are some of our all-time favorite best places to propose in Maui:

SOUTH SHORE BEACHES

Conveniently located near many of the best restaurants on the island and offering some of the most romantic sunset views, there are dozens of white sand beaches to choose from in Kihei, Wailea and Makena. Black lava rocks are present at many of these ideal proposal locations. These rocks in particular offer a gorgeous contrast to the blue water and colorful sunsets.

THE TOP OF A VOLCANO

What’s more romantic than a proposal in the clouds? Maui is home to the largest dormant volcano. Haleakala (meaning ‘house of the sun’) features otherworldly beauty and is consistently rated one of the best places to view sunrise or sunset. The drive itself is picturesque but you’ll need warm clothing for this location.

JUNGLE

Hanging vines, lush foliage, and fragrant ginger flowers set a tropical vibe for that once in a lifetime question. Follow up with an engagement photography session at the shoreline. Talk about two incredible settings in one magical West Maui location!

HAIKU MILL

There is a reason this is one of the most coveted wedding venues in the state. The Haiku Mill is over 150 years old, with a breathtaking mix of French-inspired décor, vine-draped ruins, and spectacular flora. A stroll beneath the Mill’s archway is like a trip back in time.

SECLUDED PENINSULA

Get a new perspective on Maui and sweep her off her feet, literally! A helicopter tour is the best way to explore otherwise inaccessible valleys and waterfalls. It is also the best way to reach secluded locations. This way, you can be sure to pop the question without an audience.

CLIFFSIDE

Imagine the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, the Maui sun setting on the horizon. Just the two of you, perched precariously in the most secluded island chain in the world. The imagery of a cliffside location is one of our very favorites and can easily be combined with a beach proposal or photo session.

FOREST

Not just any forest, take her to a stand of Eucalyptus with bicoastal island views. Nothing on Maui is ordinary! A forest offers privacy and a sense of adventure to start your lifetime together.

Haleakala Crater Proposal

Wookie and Gillian currently live on Oahu but were coming to Maui and it was the right time to get engaged. Since Wookie wanted to propose to Gillian somewhere spectacular he knew he needed our help.  After doing some research Wookie knew he had found the location to pop the question. Our 10,000-foot dormant volcano here in Maui ended up being the perfect choice for this surprise proposal.

THE PLAN:

We wanted to be sure Wookie had the perfect spot to propose. There is a breathtaking location at the summit of Haleakala we knew was completely perfect. This spot is a bit of a challenge to get to but Wookie was up for it. He was confident that Jillian would absolutely adore the spot we helped him select.

THE PROPOSAL:

As we mentioned in our post, IS A HALEAKALA PROPOSAL RIGHT FOR YOU? there is no place for the photographer to hide for a proposal like this. The good news is there are other tourists on the volcano so it is very easy for the photographer to blend in.  When Wookie and Gillian arrived at the place he was going to propose to the spot he was going to propose, he dropped down on one knee.  As soon as he knelt down Gillian was awestruck. She thought they were just sightseeing so she was completely surprised and of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

The Simple Proposal was the right fit for Wookie and Gillian. They had a great time celebrating their epic Haleakala Crater Proposal as the sun went down. After the proposal, Amber captured breathtaking images of the couple as the sun went down.

Is a Haleakala Proposal Right for You?

Haleakala National Park encompasses over 30,000 acres of land, ranging from the coastal area of Kipahulu filled with lush jungle and waterfalls soaring up through 6 of the world’s 14 climate zones to the summit of Maui’s dormant volcano.

The name Haleakala means “house of the sun.” Legend has it that the demigod Maui, who the island is named after, went out to capture the sun after his mother Hina complained that the days were too short for her to dry out her kapa (bark cloth). Maui went to the peak of the mountain and waited to the sun to rise from the crater. The legend begins to differ a little here, but basically Maui snared the sun with his lasso and only let it go after it agreed to travel slower for half the year. This agreement allowed Hawaii to have its seasons of winter and summer. Hawaiians enjoyed a longer growing season and Hina was able to dry out her kapa.

Haleakala Crater is a giant shield volcano that takes up three-quarters of Maui’s 727 square miles (1,170 km) and rises up to 10,023 feet (3,005 m) above sea level. The summit’s high elevation, lack of environmental pollution, and ever-changing weather patterns make it an ideal place to view the sky. In fact, astronomers come from all over the world to observe and research.

Sunrises and sunsets at Haleakala Crater can be absolutely breathtaking! The view, along with the feeling of being on top of the world, makes Haleakala an epic proposal location on Maui. However, there are a few things you should be aware of to determine if this is the best place for you and your sweetie!

There will be other people around

Haleakala is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Maui. If you are interested in proposing at the Haleakala summit at sunrise, you will have an audience. If you are open to somewhere other than the summit, there are certain spots on the crater that tend to be less busy. However, we do need to respect park rules and stay within boundaries at all times.

We do our very best to capture you at angles where other people are not in the background, but in reality, people are there. Sometimes we have to crop the photo so you won’t see everyone else around. Other times, we work photoshop magic.

Requirements for Haleakala sunrise

Due to the popularity of sunrise viewing at the summit and limited parking, Haleakala National Park reservations are required for every vehicle entering the park from 3:00 am to 7:00 am. Reservations open two months in advance and often sell out very quickly. Another batch of tickets is opened up two days before the scheduled date. Tickets are $1.50 per vehicle and must be purchased online ahead of time. They are not available up at the park entrance. If you cannot reserve a ticket and/or we cannot reserve a ticket for our photographer, we have to make plans for after sunrise.

We also have to file a permit for being able to take professional photos at Haleakala National Park. The permit process does take a while, so we need at least one month notice to make sure the permit can be filed in time.

Long drive

If you are staying in a resort area, it will likely take you at least two hours to drive from your hotel to Haleakala Summit. To ensure you get a good spot and are there on time, we will have you arrive an hour before sunrise. The good news is colors before daybreak are amazing. The bad news is you will have to be ready to leave your hotel by 2:30-3:30 in the morning, depending on the time of year and exactly where you’re driving from.

Poor cell phone service

We send you a detailed itinerary of the proposal plan. As long as you follow this plan, everything should go swimmingly. We know that stuff happens though, which can throw the plan off. Normally, you let us know and we try to make it work. However, cell phone service at Haleakala is spotty, so it might be hard to get in contact should we need to make any changes to the set plan.

Bundle up

Although we are on a tropical island, it is very cold at the summit. The temperature drops 3 degrees for every 1000 feet of elevation, so it’s about 30°F (or 17°C) colder than at sea level. Temperatures are often in the 40s F, but can dip below freezing.

We want you to be comfortable and safe, so you’ll need to wear layers, long pants, and covered shoes.

Haleakala weather is unpredictable

Weather moves really fast up at the crater and can be completely different from the rest of the island. The weather conditions frequently change throughout the day. It can be raining and covered in clouds and completely clear up to be gorgeous an hour later. If you’re doing a sunset proposal at Haleakala, watching these weather changes take place is nerve-wracking. If the weather cooperates, the colors are spectacular. Since we know Mother Nature likes to change her mind a lot at the crater, it’s a bit of a gamble.

It was cloudy during this proposal, but it cleared up right after.

In summary, if you want your proposal to be:

– in a more private atmosphere
– planned last minute
– close to your hotel or a romantic restaurant
– a time where your love will be dressed up
– in a location that will likely be sunny

Then Haleakala may not be the right Maui proposal location for you. But we have lots of other options we can discuss!

This couple has been together since high school.  I have always had a soft spot for high school sweethearts (probably because I knew my husband was “the one” since we were in high school!)  When Richard contacted me, he knew he wanted to propose on Haleakala. He initially thought he wanted to propose in the morning, but we convinced him to go with a gorgeous Haleakala sunset proposal instead.  And boy, was it worth changing the time from sunrise to sunset!

THE PLAN:

Richard wanted a more private, intimate proposal.  Haleakala in the morning is so busy, and we can’t always trust the weather.  But Haleakala at sunset is much more predictable in terms of weather, and the views you can get from the summit at sunset are out of this world!  It’s also far less busy up there in the evenings, so the proposal can be more intimate. We really prefer to shoot a sunset proposal there over sunrise.  And you’ll see why when you look at the photos!

THE PROPOSAL:

We had some really crummy weather the week before, so we were crossing our fingers that the day of their proposal the weather would clear up.  We were so lucky it did, because the proposal was absolutely beautiful. When Richard walked Agnes to the spot he was supposed to propose, he dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him!  Way above the clouds, she said “Yes” with tears in her eyes.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

The Engagement Session was just perfect.  We worked with Caleb from Areca Film Company to create a short proposal video.  We were so happy to get a lot of variation in shots up there and an unbelievable, colorful sunset up above the clouds.

Steve decided that he wanted to pop the question on the top of Haleakala, our 10,000 foot dormant volcano here in Maui.  We went a little unique in that he chose a stunning Haleakala sunset proposal.

THE PLAN:

We always love when couples choose to do sunset up there instead of sunrise.  Sunset there typically has way less people up there, and we don’t have to deal with a lot of the weather issues that can arise with a sunrise proposal.  Sunset is a great option for those who want to propose on top of the mountain like Steve did for Brooke.   

THE PROPOSAL:

When Steve brought Brooke to the spot he was going to propose, he dropped down on one knee.  As soon as he knelt down, her hands flew to her face in surprise and she started laughing.  Reactions to proposal are so varied, and I loved this one!  This proposal above the clouds had the perfect backdrop.  Brooke of course said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We had some really harsh lighting that evening, we didn’t have a lot of cloud diffusion.  But what was super cool about this proposal was that it was the day before the super moon.  So while the sun was setting, this incredible moon was rising.  We got some really great photos with the moon in the background.  It was really cold so we went back and forth between the observatory and coming back out and getting photos.  That way they could defrost a bit between the different photos we were taking.  I’m still swooning over some of these shots and how the light came in!

Sometimes, the third time is the charm.  It definitely was for Cyprian’s proposal to Charlene!  Maui’s weather can be unpredictable. Since Maui has so many micro-climates, we can generally find a spot with the perfect weather for a proposal–even if it’s our third try!  For Cyprian and Charlene’s mountain to ocean engagement session we traversed the island! This couple’s energy was contagious and they were up for anything!

THE PLAN:

Cyprian really wanted to propose on top of Haleakala, but we were in the middle of 5 days of straight rain, which is pretty much unheard of on Maui!  We had to be flexible with the proposal location and timing because of this crazy weather.  Luckily, Cyprian was ready to go with the flow!  For the first attempt, it was pouring down rain at the summit, so we scrapped that plan and said we’d try again another day that week.  We tried again the second day to go to the summit, but it was raining–again!  The third plan was Cyprian would follow me down until we found a place where it wasn’t raining and we’d stop there so he could FINALLY propose.

THE PROPOSAL:

We got halfway down the mountain and found a parting in the clouds. I pulled off to the side of the road and Cyprian followed suit.  We came up to this beautiful wide open field, I parked and pretended to be a tourist taking photos.  He led Charlene to the edge of the cliff where we were able to see all of Maui down below. That’s where he asked her to marry him! Of course, she said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We spent a little time taking photos in the field and then we headed back down the mountain to find some sunshine! On the way down, we stopped by one of my favorite coffee shops, Sip Me in Makawao.  There we got some cozy shots along with our coffee.  Cyprian’s sister, who does calligraphy, made some cute signs for them, and we were able to get some photos with those, too!  Because we were chasing the sun and weren’t having any luck upcountry, we decided to do a mountain to ocean engagement session and drove to Baldwin Beach in Paia.  There we had gorgeous views of the West Maui Mountains, and we had the beach all to ourselves!  What an adventurous day!

Cyprian and Charlene, you were a joy to photograph!  Thank you so much for letting Engaged on Maui be a part of your mountain to ocean engagement!  I loved traversing the island with you both.

Everyone knows that Haleakala has incredible sunrises, but Colin knows one of Maui’s best kept secrets. The sunsets are often more glorious than the sunrises from on top of the mountain. This sunset proposal on Haleakala did not disappoint! The sunset colors from the summit were magnificent.

THE PLAN:

Colin knew that he wanted to propose on the top of Haleakala, but he wanted to do it at sunset! A sunset proposal is a little off the beaten path for a Haleakala proposal, which is great! Haleakala’s sunsets showcase so much of what Maui has to offer: the sea, the valley, and the mountains.  It can’t get more romantic than proposing during a Maui sunset while overlooking the whole island.

THE PROPOSAL:

The weather had been crazy that week and we weren’t sure how Mother Nature was going to treat us. Fortunately, the one clear day on the mountain that week was the day Colin was proposing to Lissa.  Our associate photographer Chantelle met them on top of the mountain, and she and Colin shared a signal so Colin knew it was her without tipping off Lissa.  Chantelle followed Colin’s lead. When he was ready to pop the question, Colin walked out to the spot he wanted and our photographer was there to capture every moment!  Lissa could barely believe it was happening!  Colin had to steady Lissa as he went down to one knee because she was so surprised.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We were able to get a half hour engagement photo shoot while the beautiful light lasted!  After the proposal, Chantelle got some gorgeous shots of the newly engaged couple overlooking the crater and some dreamy photos of Lissa’s ring.  My favorite shots of the engagement session are the last captures of the evening, seeing the Maui shoreline glowing pink and the sky on fire with Lissa and Colin standing side by side and enjoying their special moment.

The morning was rainy and the chances of an epic sunrise were slim, but one way or another it was going to happen. Matt was going to ask Lisa to marry him. Lucky for him, just before sunrise the clouds began to part and vibrant oranges and reds filled the sky! This amazing sunrise proposal on Haleakala is one for the books!

The Plan:

After 14 years of friendship and then dating, Matt was ready to propose to Lisa. He said

“We meet 14 years ago randomly through AOL Chat. I knew she was the one the day I met her. She is the sweetest most caring human being I have ever met. I am lucky to have her in my life. She is my soulmate and my best friend. She has helped me through very tough times and she has never left my side.”

Like most other Haleakala proposals, we wanted to ensure that Matt would propose to Lisa in the most private place possible. Of course, we are sure to stay on the paths, but it can be a difficult feat in a public place. However, we found a little piece of mountain for Matt and Lisa to call their own and watch the sun rise!

The Proposal:

As the sun peeked over the clouds, Matt turned to Lisa, got down on one knee, and proposed! Behind me there were a few other couples who knew what was going to happen (and thankfully said they would stay back until the proposal was over)–they burst into applause after it was all said and done!

The Engagement Session:

We made our way back down the mountain stopping at some of my favorite destinations along the way! We get such amazing variety on Haleakala. –everything from lava rock to the crater to golden light and pine trees!

Lisa and Matt–thank you for including me in your AMAZING sunrise proposal on top of Haleakala! How lucky are we that the rain cleared?! It was definitely one to remember!

This is a love story that began all the way over in Cameroon, West Africa and has brought these two lovers to the other side of the world to begin a new chapter of their lives: engagement!

The Plan:

Prosbert is going to medical school in Honolulu while Giselle is going to medical school all the way over in Boston, Massachusetts–but when planning his proposal, Prosbert knew that a sunrise Haleakala proposal was exactly what he wanted to seal the deal.

The Proposal:

We had a few road bumps with this one. A woman who didn’t speak English very well blocked the path between Prosbert and myself, making it a bit difficult to get the right angle. But luckily, Prosbert was able to maneuver around her so that way I had a clear shot!

At first morning light, Prosbert got down on one knee and asked Giselle to marry him! She said yes!

The Engagement Session:

We did our engagement session on the slopes of Haleakala. It was an interesting day in that lots of clouds were coming in and out of the crater. But luckily, it wasn’t bone-chilling cold like it was for my last Haleakala proposal. We checked out some new spots and ended our session in a field of blooming flowers! It was perfect!
