Gorgeous Northwest Maui Beach Proposal

Dillon wanted beautiful scenery for his proposal to sweetheart Emily. We talked about the pros and cons of a Haleakala proposal versus a beach proposal. In the end, Dillon loved the idea of doing a day of sightseeing followed by a walk on the beach where he could propose before a romantic dinner.

THE PLAN:

Dillon asked for beach recommendations nearby their hotel in Kaanapali and was drawn to the look of this wide-open beach. Our associate Amber would be waiting for them towards the entrance, pretending to be another beachgoer. As they passed by her, she would discreetly get into place to capture the big moment.

THE PROPOSAL:

Originally, we planned to use the left side of the beach. However when Amber arrived, that area was crowded. She quickly texted Dillon that he should go to the right instead and placed their orchid flower circle so he knew exactly where to go.

Amber’s quick thinking ensured that Dillon and Emily’s engagement happened on their own section of beach. Plus, it was a great reminder of why we love using long beaches that have ample space.

Emily was thrilled at Dillon’s beautifully planned beach proposal and was even more surprised that he had a photographer there!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

At first, it was gorgeous and sunny on the beach. A raincloud came by and the sky got dark. We had a few sprinkles and suddenly an amazing double rainbow appeared. It was the perfect time to head to our second location, where we escaped the rain and ended with a sunset dance along the shoreline.

This Montage Kapalua Bay Proposal happened early morning.  This proposal was more of a spontaneous proposal.  We’d share a signal to show we were there, and then follow him until he chose just the right spot to pop the question.

THE PLAN:

When Michael contacted me, he knew that he wanted an unscripted proposal.  He needed to be able to call the shots.  So, a spontaneous proposal was just right for him.  They were having brunch at Merriman’s later that morning, so he told Nicole that they were just going to walk to the restaurant.  As soon as the couple left their hotel, we followed them to where he ultimately proposed.

THE PROPOSAL:

They were a touch late getting to the site, but honestly, that was fine.  We’d always rather have them be a little late than a little early.  We don’t want them to beat the photographer there!  Michael and Nicole strolled along the grass until he found just the right spot.  It was a gorgeous scene with the ocean behind them and the coconut trees surrounding them.  He paused for a moment and then dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.  She said YES!  They shared some smooches and then he pointed out that he hired Engaged on Maui to photograph the engagement and have a photo shoot immediately following the proposal.  She was blown away!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Morning is such a great time to do a photo shoot. Of course, morning light always offers up vibrant blues and greens, which is gorgeous.  He led her down on the lava rocks in that area, and we got some shots there.  The wind was blowing her dress just right to add a beautiful element to these images.  This couple was so gorgeous together, we could have had them go anywhere and they would’ve looked fantastic!

Sometimes things don’t always pan out as we expect them to. But in this case, I’m so, SO glad they didn’t. This Maui sunset proposal at Blowhole had rainbows, an epic sunset, and perfectly timed sea-spray!

THE PLAN:

When Scott reached out to me, he already knew the location he wanted to propose: the Nakalele Blowhole. It’s in remote Northwest Maui (seriously, it’s WAY out there) and is a bit of a hike to get there. But he knew he could get Whitney down there and that was THE spot. He chose the Perfect Proposal Package, which entailed more time alotted than we actually ended up getting.

The risk with West Maui proposals is that the Pali (Highway 30 – the ONLY safe road to get to West Maui) can back up badly. This happens most often around high tourist times, holidays, and whale season. Unfortunately, Scott and Whitney hit some traffic coming out. We ended up only having 35 minutes or so for our engagement session – but I think it was perfect! The colors down there were absolutley unbeatable and even though it was windy, these are some of my favorite images from the blowhole…hands down!

THE PROPOSAL:

Scott texted me when he arrived at the Blowhole (though sometimes I don’t get service down there) and he gently led Whitney down the cliff toward the heart-shaped rock. There we had stashed a message in a bottle for her to find. When they got down to the bottom, he wasted no time.

The last line of the letter read “Turn Around.” And when she did, she was SO surprised!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We did our engagement session right there at the blowhole and the surrounding area. There was so much diversity that we didn’t feel short-changed at all! That place is magical. We had a sunset AND a rainbow at the same time!! It was perfect!

It was one of those days where we had a huge backup on the Pali (the road that goes to Lahaina) and the sky threatened to open up and pour at any moment, but by-golly this proposal worked out amazingly well! This gorgeous Kapalua Bay proposal at Merriman’s had everything a proposal should have: lava rock, sand, personalization, and a ton of emotion!

THE PLAN:

Nate had planned a romantic dinner at one of my favorite places in West Maui: Merriman’s in Kapalua. After dinner, the plan was to lead Kim down to the rocks, where she would discover a gorgeous book Nate had made for her. I added in some orchid flowers just to spice it up a bit.

THE PROPOSAL:

Dinner ran a touch behind – but as I always say – better late than early when it comes to proposals! It began to sprinkle and I crossed my fingers. Please, please, please, don’t rain! Luckily, it only rained for two minutes or so – and then Nate and Kim appeared from the bushes. He led her over to the spot with the book. Her laughter was contagious even from a distance! When she got to the last page, Nate got down on one knee. I’m pretty sure she said yes like three times!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

For the engagement session, we opted to stay close to Merriman’s. We did some photos on the rocks and then headed down to Kapalua Bay to finish out our session. The evening was dark to begin with so we didn’t think we would get much of a sunset. Turns out that the sunset we got was AMAZING! I haven’t seen pinks like that in a really, really long time!

Since I opened Engaged on Maui in 2015, I have been itching to do a proposal somewhere off the beaten path. The allure of adventure and epic locations isn’t for everyone though (and that’s OK), but I was so incredibly excited for Jay’s proposal to Julia. Their Maui proposal at Nakalele Blowhole had a message in a bottle, beautiful scenery, and two secret friends that were waiting to surprise Julia afterward!

THE PLAN:

I arrived at the blowhole about 30 minutes before Julia and Jay were set to arrive. I met their friends Christina and Jasper and we made a plan. They were wearing matching shirts to commemorate the occasion and had made signs for after the proposal. If there’s something that makes a proposal truly special, it’s your friends or family surprising you there as well!

THE PROPOSAL:

With the help of Jasper and Christina, I was able to pick out Jay and Julia using my zoom lens. They stopped on their way down the cliff to take some photos and we patiently waited. When they approached the heart rock Jay casually plucked the bottle from its spot and handed it to Julia. She read the note and looked up–and Jay was down on one knee. We couldn’t hear the words Jay said to Julia, just her response of “Are you kidding me?!?!” over and over! She said yes! After she said yes, Christina and Jasper jumped out from behind me and surprised her! The look on her face was priceless!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We visited several places near the blowhole. This part of Maui has so many beautiful spots with cliffs, jungle, and scenic vistas. We ended our session on the beach just in time for sunset!

Julia and Jay – Your proposal was something that my heart has been aching for. And it was so, so special that your friends could be there to witness the whole thing. Congratulations Jay and Julia!

Sometimes I love it when guys want to shake it up a bit. I mean, I love stalking you guys during the proposal (or hiding in the bushes), but sometimes it is way easier if the girl knows she’s going to be a part of the photoshoot! That was exactly the plan for this romantic proposal in Northwest Maui.

THE PLAN:

Luke, the groom-to-be, contacted me wanting to find the perfect location to propose to his girlfriend Sarah. He wanted lava rocks and blue ocean–so I knew just the place. Northwest Maui is absolutely gorgeous. You get blue water, lava rock escarpments, and often times rainbows!

The plan was that Sarah thought this was a glamour shoot for her that Luke had booked. Sarah is absolutely gorgeous. She actually reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence a bit with her bright blue eyes and soft features. We began the photo session as a glamour shoot and Luke was “assisting” me. When I found the spot Luke and I had discussed, I laid down a blanket and asked Sarah to take a seat. Then I asked her if it would be OK for Luke to join her for a few because, you know, he looked so nice and everything.

THE PROPOSAL:

Once Luke sat down, he wasted no time. I love Sarah’s reaction to what he was telling her. She was SO caught off-guard and couldn’t believe it! There were a bunch of tears and a whole lot of “are you kidding me?!”–but she definitely said yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Because of the diversity of Ironwoods Beach, we decided to stay there for the duration of our session. It was really windy, but WOW was it beautiful! We got a great sunset to round off their perfect proposal!

Luke and Sarah: I loved your modern twist on proposal photography. Everything from Luke’s idea for the set up to Sarah’s reaction, the ring–everything–every moment was so emotion-filled and beautiful. Their story began in college.She was an editor for the school’s magazine, and he was an editor for the school’s newspaper. According to Joey, they were the most annoying kids in class because they were always talking to one another. But really they were simply falling in love. May 22 marked 5 years for them…and Joey had big plans to ask Jaimie to spend the rest of her life as his wife.

The Plan:

Originally, we planned on Ukumehame Beach as a proposal site, but a few days before the big day a HUGE south swell came in. Ukumehame is a popular surf spot, so the beach was absolutely packed.

We waited until the day-of to pick the spot. He chose Ironwoods Beach in Kapalua as the spot.

The Proposal:

Joey led Jaimie down to the beach. It was their last night on Maui, so they had planned to watch the sunset together anyway. It was the perfect distraction.

They laid down a blanket, but then Joey stood up and led Jaimie to the shoreline.

He dropped to one knee, and asked her to marry him. There were tears, a lot of mouth-covering, but mostly a whole lot of smiling!

The Engagement Session:

We stayed at Ironwoods for the duration of our session. Between the cliffs on the west end of the beach, a rainbow to teh north, the setting sun, and the light breeze, we had an absolutely perfect engagement session. And that smile–I swear, it must have been the first thing Joey noticed about Jaimie. Their energy together was infectious and laughter-filled.
