Maui Stand Up Paddle Board Proposal

This unique Maui stand up paddle board proposal was such a fun way to start the day!  When I initially spoke with Noah about the proposal, he had an awesome idea!  He wanted to do a morning paddle on their No Snow inflatable paddle boards they were bringing to Maui.  He thought they could paddle on to a beach and then he would propose there.  Now, my team and I could definitely get beautiful photos of them pulling up onto the beach and proposing! But after talking with Noah, we felt doing an engagement session in the water would be so true to them and their story. I knew I needed help for this one, so I called up my friend Matias from NV Maui Media who is a master at everything underwater.  Matias was really excited to work with us on this proposal.

The Plan:

The plan was for Noah and Jennifer to hop on their paddle boards in the early morning from a beach park fronting a hotel in south Maui.  When they left, they would paddle about twenty minutes down the coast. We chose a beach with two key components. First, it had easy entry. Second, it had GORGEOUS water for them to have an underwater engagement session.

The Proposal:

Rarely does a proposal go exactly according to plan.  However, I think it creates an even sweeter proposal story!  When they came up onto the shore, there was a little confusion at first.  We had placed a picnic basket at the proposal site as a “marker” where he would pop the question.  Noah couldn’t find it right away, but eventually, he came upon it. Matias was snapping away the whole time, and Jennifer was none the wiser.  When Noah found the basket, Charles Nahale, one of our favorite ukulele players on the island, came down to them and started playing their song, Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.” Jennifer, of course, was very confused. When Noah felt that it was the right moment, he dropped to one knee. BUT he couldn’t get the ring out of his pocket!  This became a super sweet moment because Jennifer knelt down next to him and helped him get the ring out of his pocket.  Then, Noah continued with the proposal after Jennifer stood back up. She said yes!

The Engagement Session:

At that point, Noah pointed out photographer Matias hiding in the bushes.  Also, one more surprise was Noah had conspired with Jennifer’s parents and his mom to surprise them after the proposal.  That was really cool!  We love when friends and family get involved!  There were a whole lot of tears and joy as Jennifer greeted her friends and family.  We then did the half-submerged engagement session.  They were in the water with the stand-up paddle board and some really lovely shots of them loving on each other in the ocean on Maui.

Mike wanted to do something that we hadn’t done before, which we are all about!  We love doing beach proposals, but it’s awesome to think out of the box, too.  He wanted to propose out on the water. So, he had chartered the boat Shadowfax. And yes, that’s Shadowfax like Gandolf’s horse.  I know, I know, I’m super nerdy for knowing that……but anyway. Here’s how our first Maui chartered boat proposal went down.

THE PLAN:

Mike initially told Dana was his dad had gifted them this chartered cruise out of Ma’alaea Harbor that morning. Actually, Mike had chartered the boat to propose to her at sea.  Marie, our associate photographer, was also on board as well as an assistant.  Dana thought our photographer team was hired by Shadowfax to take some promotional photos, so Dana didn’t suspect anything amiss with having photographers along for the cruise.

THE PROPOSAL:

When the moment was right, Captain Mike turned off the engine.  Mike, the guy proposing, said the keyword so everyone on board knew he was about to propose and everyone scurried to get into place!  Mike led Dana to the bow, dropped to one knee, and asked her to marry him.  Dana was of course blown away!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We spent the rest of the time on the boat doing some romantic shots with the newly engaged couple cuddling up on the bow and snuggling up below deck.  Marie was able to get shots with different visual interest on different parts of Shadowfax.  It was a beautiful morning with light wind and calm seas which is what you can typically expect from morning sails out of Ma’alaea.

This Montage Kapalua Bay Proposal happened early morning.  This proposal was more of a spontaneous proposal.  We’d share a signal to show we were there, and then follow him until he chose just the right spot to pop the question.

THE PLAN:

When Michael contacted me, he knew that he wanted an unscripted proposal.  He needed to be able to call the shots.  So, a spontaneous proposal was just right for him.  They were having brunch at Merriman’s later that morning, so he told Nicole that they were just going to walk to the restaurant.  As soon as the couple left their hotel, we followed them to where he ultimately proposed.

THE PROPOSAL:

They were a touch late getting to the site, but honestly, that was fine.  We’d always rather have them be a little late than a little early.  We don’t want them to beat the photographer there!  Michael and Nicole strolled along the grass until he found just the right spot.  It was a gorgeous scene with the ocean behind them and the coconut trees surrounding them.  He paused for a moment and then dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.  She said YES!  They shared some smooches and then he pointed out that he hired Engaged on Maui to photograph the engagement and have a photo shoot immediately following the proposal.  She was blown away!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Morning is such a great time to do a photo shoot. Of course, morning light always offers up vibrant blues and greens, which is gorgeous.  He led her down on the lava rocks in that area, and we got some shots there.  The wind was blowing her dress just right to add a beautiful element to these images.  This couple was so gorgeous together, we could have had them go anywhere and they would’ve looked fantastic!

This beautiful couple came all the way from New Zealand for their cruisin’ in paradise proposal on Maui.  Antony and Alysia have been together for seven years, and they’ve traveled the world together.  He knew she wasn’t expecting a proposal on this trip since they were on Maui for someone else’s wedding.  Antony really wanted to do a morning sunrise proposal, which we highly recommend. Trust me when I say there is no better way to start the day than you proposing to your love at sunrise!

THE PLAN:

We had a few little raindrops just before the couple showed up, but luckily the skies cleared and we got these amazing blues on the north shore after that!  Maui is tricky like that!  You think the rain could ruin a photo shoot, but more often than not the rain makes for incredible images.  Either way, the rain, thankfully, passed us right by that morning! We even saw some turtle tracks when they showed up, which is always fun.

THE PROPOSAL:

For the big moment, Antony led her over to just the right spot.  Ready and waiting, Marie, our photographer, was poised in the bushes to capture the proposal!  When he found the right spot, Antony dropped to one knee, and Alysia was super surprised!  Adorably, he even planned out his shirt which said “Cruisin’ in Paradise”.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION

For the engagement shoot, Antony chose the Simple Proposal Package.  So, we just stayed on the one beach for about thirty minutes or so. The best part of the morning was that we had the beach completely to ourselves.  Honestly, I think people were scared away by those sprinkles.  Luckily, Antony was willing to take the risk, and it paid off!  To start the engagement session, Marie had the couple snuggle near the water, and she captured some gorgeous sweetheart shots! While we were on the beach, these two were having the best time together laughing throughout their session. At the end of the shoot, we found a beautiful tide pool with rocks perfect for sitting on and got some sweet images there, too!

In the days leading up to Anthony’s proposal to Maricela, we became increasingly worried about the weather. It had been raining for days but we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Turns out, this surprise waterfall proposal in Maui went off without a hitch.

THE PLAN:

We went back and forth in the days leading up to the proposal. The Thursday before I had to reschedule two shoots because of the rain – and then later that week I had to reschedule two more shoots! It was just so incredibly rainy (which is unusual) in the weeks prior that even getting the proposal footage for Anthony was difficult. Waterfall proposals aren’t for the faint of heart. If we have massive amounts of rain that may make it impossible to even access waterfalls! It takes a bit of throwing caution to the wind and some super faith that everything will be OK!

The plan was to plant the book by the waterfall so Maricela would see it before the proposal. When she saw it, Anthony would get down on one knee and ask her to marry him.

THE PROPOSAL:

We had originally said 8 AM for a start time, but I wanted to give it some time to get more light before Anthony got there. So we pushed it to 9 AM. But as I thought about it more, I figured that less people and less light was better than more people and less light! I texted him right away and he arrived around 8:30, which was perfect.

He led Maricela over to the book, got down on one knee, and asked for her hand in marriage! She was so surprised and, of course, said yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

For our engagement session, we stayed in the area of Twin Falls. We were able to grab some cool shots over by the bus and the surrounding area. Because Anthony and Maricela had reservations at Mama’s Fish House (one of my favorites), we headed back that way to get some photos on their small beach before the crowds arrived!

Another helicopter proposal! I absolutely love working with Air Maui and this Private Helicopter Proposal in West Maui and Molokai has my heart. This is one of two landing spots Air Maui provides and I love both the tour and the landing spot. This place is as gorgeous as it is private.

THE PLAN:

Taylor had planned a surprise trip to Maui and wanted to really blow Anna away by taking her on a helicopter ride in Maui. He chartered the helicopter, which was great because we were the only ones on board. I brought an assistant so that way it didn’t look strange to be by myself and off we went!

THE PROPOSAL:

After the amazing tour of West Maui and Molokai, we landed in our remote location out in West Maui. It’s a private property that we can only land on weekdays, but it is gorgeous and well worth it. Taylor and Anna exited the helicopter and headed toward the shoreline. I stayed up high on the property so that when it happened I was poised and ready!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

When the time came, Anna’s reaction was amazing. And even more, I loved the reaction when she realized that I wasn’t a tourist at all, but instead I was there for her! We did a quick engagement session on the property and the joy was completely palpable!

If you ask Manny and Cristina how they met, they’ll tell you they met at church. Of course, that’s not the whole story, but I will leave it up to them to tell the rest at their own discretion. Manny reached out to me wanting to surprise Cristina with a proposal during their family photography session in Makena. This surprise proposal at Makena Cove in Maui took a little bit of finesse and a whole lot of go-with-the-flow. But in the end, Cristina’s reaction was so worth it!

THE PLAN:

The plan was that we would begin the photo session like a typical family session and within the first 5 minutes, I would cue Manny and that would be his gateway to propose. After the proposal, we would finish the rest of our session as an engagement/family session!

THE PROPOSAL:

Manny had put the ring in my camera bag ahead of time so I had to get Cristina to turn around so I could give it to him when the time was right. I positioned her and slipped the ring to Manny. Then I backed up, said the cue, and watched it unfold! There were definitely some tears…but she said YES!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We stayed over by Makena Cove and the surrounding area. The morning was absolutely gorgeous and we had the whole place to ourselves!
