Engaged on Maui works exclusively with Air Maui for our helicopter proposals. Their team coordinates with our team to get your flight scheduled and ensure you have the best time seeing Maui from the sky. Their pilots are not only experienced professionals but also act as tour guides, telling you interesting facts so you can learn about what you are seeing. Above all, we were sold by their 100% safety rating. Air Maui adheres to the highest standards of safety and has a perfect safety record of over 25 years to show for it.

How does a helicopter proposal work?

For a helicopter proposal, it will just seem like you are going on a helicopter tour as guests. Air Maui will be aware that you are going to pop the question but won’t give away the secret. You’ll be given instructions and treated like any other passenger, so your sweetie won’t suspect a thing.

Your photographer will be on board with you during the flight, pretending to be another tourist on the helicopter.

You will be asked to check in at the heliport 30 minutes before take off. This time is needed for you to watch a short safety video and get instructions before you board the helicopter.

As long as it works out with weight requirements, you and your soon-to-be fiancé will be seated in the front of the helicopter next to the pilot, where you’ll get the best view. The photographer will be in the back where they will be able to document highlights of the tour and discreetly snap a few candids of you enjoying the sights before the proposal.

Once you get to the landing, it’s go time! You only have 15-20 minutes at the landing, so you should walk to your proposal spot right away to make the most of your time.

Don’t worry! We will give you an itinerary that tells you where to go and what to do for the big moment. Your photographer will be hanging back, pretending to take pictures of the scenery, while secretly waiting for you to get down on one knee so they can capture every second.

After the proposal, you can reveal it was all a set up. Your photographer will come over and introduce themselves and you’ll do a quick mini engagement session at the landing before getting back into the helicopter.

What are the helicopter tours offered?

There are two helicopter tours that will work for proposals: Cliffside Landing – Hana & Haleakala and Oceanfront Landing – West Maui & Molokai.

Cliffside Landing – Hana & Haleakala
For Cliffside Landing, you begin the tour by flying above Haleakala. Haleakala translates to the “House of the Sun.” In Hawaiian legend, Haleakala is known for being the spot at which the demigod Maui ensnared the sun, freeing it only after it promised to linger longer in the sky.

After getting a bird’s eye view of our dormant volcano, you venture to east Maui to the rugged area of Kaupo where you will propose.

At Cliffside Landing, there are multiple spots to get down on one knee…

With the ocean in the background

With the mountains in the background

Or angle yourselves on the left side of the cliff

Or the right side of the cliff

Once you ask the all-important question, you can relax and enjoy your engagement session at Cliffside Landing!

After the proposal and engagement session on the landing, you get back in the helicopter and fly over Hana. This is our more jungle-y side of Maui, so it’s really lush and green, perfect for viewing waterfalls! Whether or not you decide to drive the infamous Road to Hana, it’s also a really neat perspective to see the twists and turns of the road from the air.

Oceanfront Landing – West Maui & Molokai
Oceanfront Landing is only available on weekdays. For Oceanfront Landing, you actually fly over to Molokai first, where you get to see the tallest sea cliffs in the world on the north side of the island and waterfalls in the rainforest.

Towards the end of your flight, you’ll return to Maui and land in Kahakuloa, a small, secluded village that offers a glimpse of old Hawaii.

Oceanfront Landing has one ideal proposal spot. If you follow our directions, we can get the palm tree, ocean, and the head of Kahakuloa in the background of your proposal.

Oceanfront Landing is smaller than Cliffside Landing, so we’ll capture you by the prettiest backdrops before continuing across the West Maui Mountains and back to the heliport.

Air Maui does offer other helicopter tours, but we don’t offer them for proposals because no landing takes place.

Similarly, you may notice that Air Maui has a “Marry Me Tour” on their website. This option is a quick tour that includes flying over a beach. On the beach, there is a “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” banner with your sweetie’s name written in the sand.

With this tour, there is no landing, so you don’t get down on one knee. Since the photographer would be seated in back of you and wouldn’t be able to capture your faces, Engaged on Maui does not have a helicopter proposal package with this flyover tour. However, if you decide to do a beach proposal flight with Air Maui and not document your proposal, we can help you with an engagement session after your flight instead.

What are Engaged on Maui’s helicopter proposal packages?

Engaged on Maui has two helicopter proposal packages: Air Maui Ala Carte and Air Maui Private Charter.

Air Maui Ala Carte Package
Our Air Maui Ala Carte package includes three seats – one for you, your other half, and your photographer. The helicopter fits up to six passengers, depending on weight, so there will at least be another couple on board with you, if not three other people besides the photographer.

To preserve your memories, Air Maui Ala Carte comes with a 5×5″ 10-page highlight album as well as digital backups of the images in your album.

Air Maui Private Charter Package
The Air Maui Private Charter Package means you rent out the entire helicopter so it’s completely private. The photographer brings along an assistant so it’s less suspicious. Or if you choose to add on videography, the videographer and photographer can pretend they are traveling together.

The Private Charter package also includes two leis and champagne upon return to the heliport.

The 10-page highlight album is upgraded to a bigger 8×8″ size, and of course, those digital backups are included to make sharing with family and friends a breeze!

What else can you add on to make a helicopter proposal special?

A helicopter proposal brings plenty of wow factor as it is, but we do have a few favorite add ons.

24-Hour Sneak Peek
Our number one recommendation is always to add a 24-Hour Sneak Peek to your proposal package. Our turnaround time is 2-4 weeks, so that sneak peek will give you a photo of the proposal to make that announcement on social media within 24 hours.

Mini Engagement Session
Your engagement session at the helicopter landing is short and sweet. Adding a Mini Engagement Session prolongs the fun and adds diversity to your images. After the helicopter tour, you follow your photographer to a nearby beach to capture those quintessential Maui vacation photos.

Videography
Video really has the ability to let you relive your big moment. Something about the movement and seeing the two of you interacting gives us all the feels.

Videography can be added on to the Private Charter package. Your videographer joins your photographer aboard the helicopter and edits your footage into a short film set to music.

Is a helicopter proposal the right fit for you?

If you are looking for an activity and proposal in one, a helicopter proposal may be calling your name!

The advantage of pairing a proposal as a surprise during your helicopter tour means that you don’t have to come up with a cover story to get your sweetie to a certain place at a certain time. You can simply tell them you booked a helicopter tour, and Air Maui told you when you need to be at the heliport.

We can even send you a PDF that looks like it came straight from Air Maui. This comes in handy if your sweetie is the type who likes to print out itineraries and organize your vacation.

A helicopter proposal is also perfect for those who want their proposal to be a more intimate moment. Of course, the Private Charter guarantees you the most privacy. But the Ala Carte still gives you a remote setting with only a few witnesses.

Both tours are impressive. The view from the helicopter is a unique way to experience the majesty of Maui, and the landings are picturesque proposal backdrops.

When is a helicopter proposal NOT the right fit?

A helicopter proposal may not work if either of you have a fear of heights or get severe motion sickness.

Since the helicopter tour is an activity and a proposal, it is among our higher priced packages.

Lastly, a helicopter proposal doesn’t allow for anything to be set up at the proposal site. If you’re wanting flowers or some other details to be waiting at the place you pop the question, we can help you select a location that is best suited for a beautiful proposal set up.

How do you reserve a helicopter proposal?

The first thing to do is fill out our inquiry form, so we can schedule a phone call with you and start planning.

Once you have an idea of your desired proposal date, proposal package (Private Charter or Ala Carte), and tour (Cliffside Landing or Oceanfront Landing), we can check availability with Air Maui and our photographer calendar. If you are inquiring last minute or during a busy travel time, we may have to expand checking availability to several days while you are here on Maui.

Once we have a tentative date and time frame, we can send you a booking link to reserve your helicopter proposal. The booking link requires a signed contract and 50% deposit to secure your date.

When we have a completed booking link, your names, and approximate body weights, we will be able to officially reserve your tour!

From here, you are pretty set until you pay your remaining balance and we send your itinerary over with proposal instructions about a week in advance.

Anna contacted us last minute because she just happened to find the perfect ring. With their upcoming trip to Maui, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to pop the question to her love Jessa. An Oceanfront Helicopter Proposal gave them an amazing adventure and private proposal all in one!

THE PLAN:

When thinking about her proposal, Anna said, “I just want to give her a memorable, cinematic experience. She’s down to earth, but she’s also my princess. The helicopter appealed to me because it’s kind of over the top in a good way.”

With those words, Anna really summed what we love most about our Air Maui proposals. You’re not only getting engaged but having an amazing experience, seeing the beauty of the islands from the sky. THE PROPOSAL:

Once we got to the landing, Anna led Jessa out towards the ocean. Jessa thought they were checking out the scenery and had no idea how her life was about to change in the next few moments. The Best Places To Propose In Maui

Maui exudes romance! With over 30 miles of beaches and a huge variety of settings to drop to one knee, Maui has you covered. We know that choosing the best location could depend on your personalities, her subtle hinting, your sense of adventure, or sentimental incorporations. That being said, we wanted to gather a list of our favorite proposal locations to help you out! Without further ado. here are some of our all-time favorite best places to propose in Maui:

SOUTH SHORE BEACHES

Conveniently located near many of the best restaurants on the island and offering some of the most romantic sunset views, there are dozens of white sand beaches to choose from in Kihei, Wailea and Makena. Black lava rocks are present at many of these ideal proposal locations. These rocks in particular offer a gorgeous contrast to the blue water and colorful sunsets.

THE TOP OF A VOLCANO

What’s more romantic than a proposal in the clouds? Maui is home to the largest dormant volcano. Haleakala (meaning ‘house of the sun’) features otherworldly beauty and is consistently rated one of the best places to view sunrise or sunset. The drive itself is picturesque but you’ll need warm clothing for this location.

JUNGLE

Hanging vines, lush foliage, and fragrant ginger flowers set a tropical vibe for that once in a lifetime question. Follow up with an engagement photography session at the shoreline. Talk about two incredible settings in one magical West Maui location!

HAIKU MILL

There is a reason this is one of the most coveted wedding venues in the state. The Haiku Mill is over 150 years old, with a breathtaking mix of French-inspired décor, vine-draped ruins, and spectacular flora. A stroll beneath the Mill’s archway is like a trip back in time.

SECLUDED PENINSULA

Get a new perspective on Maui and sweep her off her feet, literally! A helicopter tour is the best way to explore otherwise inaccessible valleys and waterfalls. It is also the best way to reach secluded locations. This way, you can be sure to pop the question without an audience.

CLIFFSIDE

Imagine the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, the Maui sun setting on the horizon. Just the two of you, perched precariously in the most secluded island chain in the world. Keenan met Michelle in a dance troupe in their senior year of college.  They have been crazy about each other ever since. Recently, they took a super romantic trip to Cancun, and while there talked about getting engaged.  So, while Michelle knew a proposal would be coming at some point, she didn’t know when or where! Booking their last minute trip to Maui, Keenan contacted us to get their chartered helicopter proposal in East Maui off the ground!

THE PLAN:

When planning this trip, one thing Keenan was really clear about was wanting somewhere incredibly private.  So, the chartered helicopter with just the two of them was the perfect choice! Air Maui was going to take the couple (and our associate photographer Amber) to the East Side of Maui for a private location for their proposal.  

THE PROPOSAL:

After we touched down, Keenan and Michelle “explored” the location for a bit.  Really, though, Keenan was leading her to just the right spot to propose! When they got to the cliff side, he dropped on one knee and asked Michelle to marry him!  She was so happy! And those blues in the background of these shots just can’t be beat!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

After she said “YES!”, we took some shots at this location.  Sometimes this location can get a little windy. So, one thing we LOVED about this proposal was that Keenan opted to tack on a mini-session to their proposal.  We went to a gorgeous white sand beach with views that go on forever! The variety in images we got were incredible!

One reason I wanted to highlight this proposal is because we’re coming into the winter months.  For Maui, that means we’ll be seeing some more rainfall than we normally see throughout the rest of the year.  It’s already been quite rainy here lately. And everyone is always concerned with how the weather will impact their proposal.  Which is, of course, a really important question to ask.  We do have locations that are more dry than other locations and doing a helicopter tour is a great way to see what a lot of rain can do to Maui.  This is the perfect example of a gorgeous, avoid-the-rain, Maui waterfalls and rainbows helicopter proposal.

THE PLAN:

It had been pretty rainy in the days leading up to Chen’s proposal. But we kept a close eye on the weather and we worked with Air Maui and it turns out that this became one of our favorite Cliffside Landing proposals we’ve done yet!

THE PROPOSAL:

When Chen and Mia got off the helicopter, they wandered around a bit enjoying the view.  Chen then led Mia to the perfect spot, and he dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him!  She said, “YES!”  One of my favorite parts of this proposal was how the wind blew the train of her dress.  It looked as if it was dancing!  I love how the wind adds such drama to a moment.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

We spent some time after the proposal on an engagement photo session.  We got some incredible shots of the rushing waterfalls in the mountains behind them.  It was really a magnificent day.  There was even a double rainbow on our ride back!

Mike reached out to me with his plan to propose to his long term girlfriend Laura.  He knew he wanted to do an Air Maui Helicopter proposal.  But he was also interested in our Storyteller Collection, which we were stoked about.  Oftentimes, guys just opt for our photography package and don’t think about videography.  After this proposal was all said and done, I got a phone call from Laura telling me how much she loved the combination of the photos and the video because it told the whole story and it was invaluable to her.  So, that was really cool to hear from her after the fact.  How awesome to hear that she was just as thrilled about the experience as we were!  Here is their breathtaking Maui helicopter surprise proposal.

THE PLAN:

These two have a secret metaphor they use to talk about building trust: a jar of marbles. They talk about how trust is built up over time and it’s represented by this jar of marbles.  So, Mike had a plan to use an actual jar of marbles in his proposal. Mike is a  professional motivational speaker, and this idea was just so true to him!

To manage the jar of marbles, we had to be a extra sneaky. Right before they hopped on the Air Maui Helicopter for their West Maui/Molokai Oceanfront Landing tour, our associate photographer, Marie, hustled down to the parking lot.  She rushed to Mike’s rental car and snagged the jar of marbles Mike had left in his vehicle. Marie hid it in her backpack so Laura wouldn’t get suspicious.  Everyone boarded the private charter, and off they went!

THE PROPOSAL:

When they touched down, Marie kept the jar of marbles in the helicopter itself so that was Mike could grab it when he was ready.  When the time was right, Mike grabbed the jar out of Marie’s backpack and brought it out to the coastline where he would propose to Laura.  He led his love to the ocean-side and brought out the jar of marbles.  Within the jar he had placed a little pouch with the ring in it.  They talked by the coastline and that’s where he brought out the ring and asked her to marry him.  She, of course, said an emphatic “YES!”

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Throughout the whole engagement photo session, Laura just couldn’t contain her excitement!  We even caught her jumping for joy in a couple shots.  Also, we had Caleb from Areca Film Company there to capture all of the pieces of this proposal on video.  Since they did a private charter, which we always love with Air Maui, there was champagne and leis waiting for them afterward.

A couple weeks ago I got a call that someone incredibly successful wanted to hire Engaged on Maui to take his proposal photos.  Do I have any football fans out there?  How about any New England Patriots fans?  If you haven’t heard this guy’s name yet, just wait a couple weeks until this season starts and with stats like his he’ll be a household name. I was excited to help plan and photograph the Maui helicopter proposal with Patriots Wide Receiver Brandin Cooks.  I didn’t get any inside scoop about him, but one thing I know for sure is that Brandin is a super kind guy and his now-fiance Bri is an absolute sweetheart.

THE PLAN:

Brandin had reached out to Air Maui having gone on one of their awesome doors-off helicopter tours before.  He was ready to propose to his girlfriend, Bri, and knew she would LOVE a Maui helicopter proposal and having their proposal photographed would be extra special for her.  Our destination for this proposal was Kaupo where there are lots of wide open spaces and great views of Haleakala.  He couldn’t wait to share this experience with his love.

THE PROPOSAL:

When we landed, Bri still didn’t know that the woman sitting with them on the helicopter snapping away was actually there to photograph them.  She thought I was just along for the tour.  After hopping off the helicopter, the happy couple walked around Kaupo a bit and took some selfies.  All the while, I was surreptitiously photographing them, too.  When he was ready, Brandin walked her over to the shore and dropped down to one knee.  When he asked her to marry him Bri was absolutely blown away.

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Soon after he popped the question, he pointed me out to Bri.  She had such a great reaction to being surprised with a secret proposal photographer!  From there, we started the engagement session.  We had a lot of wind that day, but that didn’t seem to faze them one bit.  Haleakala was so clear that day, and we got a lot of gorgeous sweetheart shots of the two of them basking in their just-engaged glow.

Bradley and Tatiana are both air traffic controllers from Canada, so a chartered helicopter proposal on Maui was the ideal way for these two to get engaged!  While they were planning their trip to Maui, Bradley got in touch with me to plan out the helicopter tour with Engaged at Maui and Air Maui for our helicopter proposal option.

The Plan:

Bradley knew that Tatiana was expecting a proposal on this trip, but she didn’t know when it was going to happen. Engaged on Maui took care of all the planning of the helicopter tour, so all Bradley had to do was choose the option for the helicopter tour.  He chose the West Maui / Molokai tour.  They had an absolutely gorgeous day!  The Molokai sea cliffs were breathtaking.  The plan was once they landed, Bradley would go towards a beautiful spot and pop the question!

The Proposal:

When they landed on the property, our associate photographer Amber was able to do some ninja shots of the couple without Tatiana realizing what was going on.  When the moment was right, Bradley dropped down to one knee and asked Tatiana to marry him.  He chose an incredible spot with the cliffs of Kahakuloa in the background.  Amber was there snapping away to capture the whole moment.  Bradley was down on his knee for a full minute, so we were able to get a bunch of great shots of him proposing!  In that moment, Tatiana finally realized that Bradley had chartered the helicopter just for them!  She was so surprised!

The Engagement Session:

Once the proposal happened and she realized why Amber was there, we started the engagement session. First, we got a couple ring shots. It’s gorgeous, by the way.  Then we took a handful of breathtaking sweetheart shots with the cliffs behind them. Of course, we had to take some shots with the helicopter and with the pilot to commemorate their chartered helicopter proposal on Maui!  Upon their return to Air Maui, they were greeted with leis and champagne!  What a special way to end their engagement session!

Another helicopter proposal! I absolutely love working with Air Maui and this Private Helicopter Proposal in West Maui and Molokai has my heart. This is one of two landing spots Air Maui provides and I love both the tour and the landing spot. This place is as gorgeous as it is private.

THE PLAN:

Taylor had planned a surprise trip to Maui and wanted to really blow Anna away by taking her on a helicopter ride in Maui. He chartered the helicopter, which was great because we were the only ones on board. I brought an assistant so that way it didn’t look strange to be by myself and off we went!

THE PROPOSAL:

After the amazing tour of West Maui and Molokai, we landed in our remote location out in West Maui. It’s a private property that we can only land on weekdays, but it is gorgeous and well worth it. Taylor and Anna exited the helicopter and headed toward the shoreline. I stayed up high on the property so that when it happened I was poised and ready!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

When the time came, Anna’s reaction was amazing. And even more, I loved the reaction when she realized that I wasn’t a tourist at all, but instead I was there for her! We did a quick engagement session on the property and the joy was completely palpable!

After spending an astonishing 100 days on the road touring the US, Lane knew for 1000% sure that Sophie was the girl he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.  A privately chartered remote helicopter proposal in Maui was just the ticket!

THE PLAN:

A few weeks before the proposal, I spoke with Lane over the phone and we chatted about the options. Once I began to tell him how amazing the helicopter proposal is with Air Maui, he was hooked. A week before the proposal, Lane sent me a box with a very special book he created just for Sophie. I was to wrap it and leave it in my bag, which would be in the helicopter, so Lane could snag it when Sophie wasn’t looking.

THE PROPOSAL:

There are two wonderful places to propose with this location: with the ocean in the background and with the mountains. Lane chose the mountains and I think it was totally the right choice! The mountains were SO green because of the recent rain we’ve had and the clouds in the mountains just added to the beauty! Lane led Sophie out to the field, gave her the book and I cautiously started snapping away. On the first page of the book it read “Sophie – the only thing I’ve ever wanted to change about you is your last name…” And that’s when Lane got down on one knee! She said yes!

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:

Because we had a private charter through Air Maui, we were able to stick around the location a bit longer than usual! We were even treated to a beautiful rainbow during our session! Since it was also Sophie’s birthday, we celebrated with a wine toast!

Lane and Sophie: thank you for including us in your romantic remote helicopter proposal in Maui! You two are so sweet together and we couldn’t have picked a more beautiful day for the proposal!
